Principal’s Report

SHANE DUPUY

PD Day

On their first day back, staff had little time to reminisce about the enjoyable time they had on break. They spent the day engaged in discussions regarding the direction of student learning and engagement. There was robust conversation around best practice of classroom management and a lengthy session on professional efficacy. The professionalism and enthusiasm of the staff augers well for the remainder of the year.

Parent meetings

Parent meetings are a fantastic opportunity to sit down with your child’s teachers to discuss their academic and social progress or challenges. Personally, I have always found a conversation far better to inform parents of their child’s progress than I could ever relay in a written report. Following the receipt of the Semester 1 report, parents were offered the opportunity to contact teachers to arrange with them personally, a time that suited to meet during week one. Thank you to those parents who came and discussed their child’s progress, whether it was requested by the staff or the family.

As always, if you have any queries regarding your child’s progress, or if you are a new family to the College, your child’s teacher is the first point of contact and will look forward to meeting with you.

Teacher changes

This term we welcome to the college Ms. Nico Lovegrove, who will be covering for Mr. Kennedy on his well-deserved long service leave, and Ms. Hollie Harris who will be working in the English and Humanities subject areas. Mr. Finn Landre will work more with the Middle and Senior School students in the areas of PE, Mathematics and Humanities, and Ms. Lisa Danne will take over the Prep – Y5 PE lessons. Mrs. Janine Olsen, a well-experienced and highly regarded operator in this space, has taken over the Inclusive Education Coordinator role from Mrs. Alita Carpenter. May I take this opportunity to publicly thank Alita for the wonderful job she has done over the years for PBC students and families. You’ve been amazing. Whilst continuing to teach our Y8 Italian students, Mrs. Lisa Bell will also support senior students with their VET programs as well as Mrs. Olsen.

New classrooms

Over the holidays, College builder Damo, electrician Jeff, painter John and plumber Steve, worked tirelessly to ensure our new classrooms and an office space were ready to occupy by our Y10-12 students and staff. The classrooms are fantastic spaces with new carpet, TV’s, air conditioning, desks, and chairs. The teachers are progressively adding their own personal touches to them to ensure the rooms are comfortable and engaging places to learn. A huge thanks must also go to our grounds and IT crew of Adam, Pepe, Simon, and Josh who not only assisted with many of the tasks associated with preparing the rooms for the student’s return, but for many other unrewarding tasks such as line marking for handball courts, moving of furniture, installation of AV equipment and general college maintenance. Your efforts are very much appreciated.

PIPS purchase

Funds raised by our hardworking PIPS team has enabled the College to employ the services of the Coolum Men’s Shed who built us 2 new picnic tables. The gents did a great job, and the tables are a welcomed addition to eating areas.

Early Departures

In the event of a child needing to be picked up before the end of the school day at 2:55pm, parents / carers are required to personally present at the front office to sign their child out; prior notification via email or phone call to administration staff is also requested. Upon arrival, your child’s teacher will be contacted by administration staff, and they will come down to the office to meet you. Parents are requested to wait in the administration building and not wander through to classrooms or the playground.

Naplan Results

Individual Student Reports (ISR) for this year’s Naplan have arrived. For the first time, student results are reported against nationally agreed Proficiency Standards. Previously, student results were reported on a 10-band scale. To support parents’ understanding of reporting, a copy of ACARA’s Parent Brochure on the Proficiency Standards has been sent home with your child’s Naplan report. Parents are reminded that Naplan, like any other standardised test, is a snapshot of a moment in time of your child’s academic ability and that there are many factors that can contribute to either a positive or negative outcome. However, in the many years I spent in the classroom preparing students for, and conducting Naplan assessments, I always found them to be a surprisingly accurate summation of a child’s ability.

Student success

The SCSA students have been flying the flag proudly in recent times, with first place in respective tournaments for basketball and futsal. Our basketballers are quickly making a name for themselves in the Southeast Queensland region whilst some of our Futsal teams are multiple state champions and competing nationally.

We have also had some individual success from our surfing gun, Gisele S, who has been competing well in local tournaments. In the coming weeks, Gisele will compete in the State Championships as part of the Sunshine Coast Open Girls team before heading overseas to compete in the Junior Women’s Surf League (JWSL). Amazing!

Congratulations also to Blake K, Benny N and Sean C who were selected in the Boys U16 State Squad for Football (Soccer). Being such a high participation sport, particularly in this age bracket, this is an outstanding achievement.

Finally, our first ever team entered the Esports Fuse Cup competition and won a regional event at their first attempt. Well done to Mr. Cahalan for his efforts in preparing the students and creating yet another opportunity for PBC to shine in our community. Congratulations also to the dedicated team members who have spent many hours honing their skills. Whilst greater detail can be found in the sports news and articles below, I’d like to take this opportunity to congratulate all PBC students, academy or not, that are experiencing success and achieving personal and team goals. Your dedication and commitment to your chosen sporting endeavour is inspiring.

Junior School

ALITA CARPENTER

Welcome to term 3 everyone! It’s been absolutely fabulous to see all of the Prep to Year 4 students back at school after a lovely long break, in their correct uniforms and looking refreshed.

This term, being only 9 weeks, will surely fly by.  This week have celebrated 100 days in prep this week, we have a few assemblies to host this term so please stay posted and read the correspondence that your child teachers send home to ensure that you stay abreast of everything that is coming up. Our Junior School camp will be running in Week 9 this term. Please re-correspondence pertaining to the camp for Years, 2, 3 and 4, carefully.

*Please remember to pre-order any food from the tuck shop in the mornings. We discourage students from lining up to buy food and drinks from the tuck shop during breaks as it is likely that they will run out of time to eat, and food items for sale during the day are limited.

* We’ve opened up our play spaces again for breaks (for the year 3 and 4 students) which they are extremely pleased about.

Please continue to communicate with us regarding any questions or feedback you might have. We value your thoughts and partnership with us.

Middle/Senior School

ASHLEIGH MORRISON

A warm welcome back to the school term. A special welcome to those new to our PBC Family. Having students return to classes with a spring in their step and witnessing them catch up on holiday happenings has been a wonderful sight.

As we encounter the term ahead, please find below a number of important reminders for your attention.

Semester 1 Reports

At the end of Term 2, Year 5-10 Semester 1 reports were emailed. It is important that you take the time to sit and read over these with your child/ren. Being a reflective learner encourages self-regulated learning and ensures that your child is thinking about ways in which they could improve their learning.

Throughout Weeks 3 and 4 student monitoring will take place during homeroom classes, where your child will have the opportunity to reflect on their results from Semester 1 and set goals for their subjects in Semester 2.

Save the Date! – Subject Information afternoon

Year 11 2024 Subject Information afternoon will be held on Wednesday 23 August 4:30-6pm. A letter to current Year 10 parents will be emailed home in the coming weeks with timelines around the 2023 subject selection process.

Year 10 – SET Planning for Year 11 2024

Our Year 10 students are currently working on the preliminary work for SET planning in Life skills and Short Course Skills lessons. I encourage parents/carers of our Year 10 students to engage in conversation with your children, to assist their forward planning. The subject selection evening mentioned above will be the official start of this process, but we encourage students and families to start investigating future pathways and what may need to happen to allow them to get there. Again, a letter will be sent home to parents outlining the subject selection process.

Peregian Beach College says no to bullying.

Bullying can take many forms including:

  • Physical bullying which involves physical actions such as hitting, pushing, obstructing or being used to hurt or intimidate someone. Damaging, stealing or hiding personal belongings is also a form of physical bullying.
  • Psychological bullying is when words or actions are used to cause psychological harm. Examples of psychological bullying include name-calling, teasing or making fun of someone because of their actions, appearance, physical characteristics or cultural background.
  • Indirect bullying is when deliberate acts of exclusion or the spreading of untrue stories are used to hurt or intimidate someone.
  • Cyberbullying is the ongoing abuse of power to threaten or harm another person using technology. Cyberbullying can occur in chat rooms, on social networking sites, through emails or on mobile phones.

If a student is being bullied, they are required to report bullying to a College staff member, the member of staff will then follow a rigorous procedure to ensure that the bullying ceases.  Some students are concerned about reporting bullying due to being called names such as a “snitch”.  Any student who retaliates against another student for reporting bullying is acting as a bully and consequences will follow.  In other words, students are protected once they report bullying.

Please see below some reminders of what to do if your child is away.

Extended leave: If your child will be on extended leave, please complete the leave form found on our website. https://www.pbc.qld.edu.au/policies/

  1. Report via the website: https://www.pbc.qld.edu.au/pbc-contact-absence-report/
  2. Respond to the text message sent by admin. This message will be sent by approximately 9:30am.

Early Departure: If your child must depart school early, parents are asked to report to the admin office. Staff will then arrange for your child to be collected early. This will be noted as an early departure and will count towards your child’s attendance.

Late arrival: Where possible parents are asked to accompany their child to the office to sign in. This will be noted as a late arrival and will count towards your child’s attendance.

Have Your Family Circumstances Changed?

To ensure you are receiving communications from the College, ensure your details are accurate by checking in with our lovely and hardworking administration staff.

As part of this process, we ask that you please check, update or add an Alternate Emergency Contact for your family.  This person will be contacted should you be unavailable in case of an emergency.

Where there has been a family separation and parents now reside at different addresses, please be aware we can effectively manage separate contact details on our system without compromising communication regarding your child. In the case of separated families, it would be ideal to have an Emergency Contact listed for each parent.

Please don’t hesitate to get in touch with us if you need help updating any changes (including new family court orders or conditional communication).

Lost Property

Any items of lost property that are found are handed in at the Student Administration Office or Primary Reception. Please make sure any items brought to school are clearly labelled.

FUSE CUP

HEATH CAHALAN

We are ecstatic to announce the resounding success of our PBC E-Sports team at the highly anticipated FUSE CUP! Under the leadership of Captain Jacob Butler, our team of nine determined students fearlessly took on the challenge, competing against 48 skilled players from other top schools on the Sunshine Coast.

The team’s dedication and teamwork were on full display, but it was Eli’s exceptional performance in the Grand Final, where he showcased nerves of steel to secure a thrilling victory in extra time.

Throughout the day, our students exhibited all the values of PBC, along with their immense passion for gaming, making us very proud.

The FUSE CUP not only provided an exhilarating platform for competition but also offered valuable learning opportunities through informative seminars on E-Safety, mental health, and cyberbullying awareness.

The day’s success wouldn’t have been possible without the support of dedicated staff like Kate Hansell, Dan and his amazing FUSE CUP team, and the unwavering encouragement from PBC parents.

This triumph marks a significant milestone for our school’s E-Sports program, and we are thrilled to witness their continued success in Term 4!

Sporting Academy

NETBALL

The Sunshine Coast FIRE Netball has seen exceptional growth this year! The academy currently trains 24 athletes in the full-time netball pathway program.

With this growth, coach Nat has seen the need to expand the coaching compliment to support and extend the training sessions – we are happy to introduce the following assistant coaches commencing term 3, 2023:

Emma Walters – Emma grew up playing netball in Victoria and followed a pathway from local to state to representing Australia. Coach Emma will develop skill and understanding around the attacking game.

Melissa (Mel) Butt – Mel is a long-term member of the Sunshine Coast sports community and in 2019 received the Netball QLD “Community coach of the year” award and in 2022 was presented the “Spirit of USC Thunder” award. Mel will focus on Strength & Conditioning to develop “change of direction”, “Low Centre Mass” & “Wide Base of Support”.

Bridey Condren – Bridey has played netball since she was 7 years old and has wealth of experience with playing for Netball Queensland and spending time at the Australian Institute of Sport. Bridey’s training includes partnering with Fever, Firebirds and most recently the Lightning. Bridey’s focus with the players will be “Ball Handling” and “Connecting The Court”.

It goes without saying that we need to watch the SCSA FIRE Netball space… these girls are working hard, the coaches are committed and very soon the Full-Time training will show its success! We are also very excited to soon receive our apparel – beautiful, strong colours that will in the very near future become a FIRE brand to reckon with!

Basketball

During the July holidays the Peregian Beach College boys’ FIRE basketball team participated in the Gold Coast Invitational for 2023. Open Division teams from local and interstate school were invited to this tournament at the Coomera Indoor Sports Centre.

The FIRE boys certainly did not disappoint. In fact, a phenomenal FIRST PLACE on the ladder and a GOLD MEDAL was achieved in the final standings!

“Well done to the team for producing quality games over some tough opponents. They have certainly closed ranks and have become a tight knit team, turning up for each other over & over again” – socials

A huge congratulations and heartfelt thank you to Coach Jorden Page who has worked extremely hard with the boys to create a successful and committed program. No doubt the Sunshine Coast Basketball Fire team will be going from strength to strength!

Last weekend Jasmine attended Adelaide Youth Theatres Auditions in Adelaide. Over the 3 days 48 performers from around Australia auditioned for special parts in the USA 2024 tour and will be performing shows in Disney World, Universal Studios, Atlanta Junior Theatre Festival and attending New York Broadway/dancing workshops and backstage Broadway events.

Jasmine Auditioned for Musical Theatre, Ballet and singing/dancing performances.

Jasmine was successful in landing roles in all performances and was also given the privilege of being chosen as 1 of 16 ballerinas who will be performing the Nutcracker Ballet in Disney World.

Jasmine needs to travel to Adelaide 3 more times for rehearsals and will be rehearsing via zoom every week until they leave for the USA on 1st January 2024.

Unfortunately, Mrs Adler and Miss Angela couldn’t make the day, however, the lovely Miss Shirley and Miss A joined in on their celebrations. Although they found it a little bit hard to hear what the preppies were telling them, the Preps were very kind and helped our visiting 100-year teachers throughout their day.
