Principal’s Report

SHANE DUPUY

And we’re rolling!

It’s hard to believe that we are already past halfway through Term 1. From the rare opportunities I get to wander through the college, I see students working well with their teachers and am encouraged by the positive feedback I am receiving from the teachers regarding their students’ efforts.

Last week, parents in the primary sector were given the opportunity to meet with their child’s teacher to discuss the learning behaviours that have been evidenced over the first month or so. These meetings are a terrific opportunity to meet face to face and share successes and discuss plans moving forwards.

I am finalising a letter to all families to highlight a range of discussion items that have popped up this year. For some families, many of the items will be known; however, there may be many families who have missed some valuable information or heard things ‘on the grapevine’ rather than from the college proper. I expect to have this open letter emailed to families within the week.

2024 PIPS

Since our last newsletter, a group of 16 enthusiastic parents, both long-standing and new, met in the Kelly Library to discuss the role of our PIPS group. I had the pleasure of informing the group of the vital role PIPS plays to support our students in their fundraising endeavours. I look forward to witnessing these wonderful volunteers work together to raise funds to be used to purchase equipment utilised by all PBC students, or to support charities and community groups, as identified by our student body. Thank you to Angie Stinton who has stepped in to help lead this group.

Early Success

I was delighted to hear of our PBC Fire Basketball Academy students take out the CBSQ competition. Whilst I was unable to get to the event myself, reports back from attending staff and coaches highlighted not only how well our students competed and dominated all games, going through undefeated, by how well these young men represented the college in a respectful and humble manner. Congratulations to coach Jorden and all team members.

Welcome Michael and Craig

Last week we welcomed Michael Trace to our college. Michael will lead our maintenance team with current staff Pepe and Josh. He has extensive experience in both grounds and maintenance and has already supported the team with his hands on approach.

We can also officially welcome Craig Moir to the role of Transport Manager. Craig is well-known to the college, having been driving buses here for several years. He was a great support to our admin team whilst the search for a new manager took place, but once he threw his hat into the ring, it was easy to make the role officially his.

It’s coming together

It’s not hard to spot the 2 cranes that are currently dominating the college skyline. This week, the last of the powder coated steel framing were delivered for our sports stadium and riggers have been working hard to get it erected. It is anticipated that this process will take 3 weeks after which, roofing contractors will be onsite to complete the next phase. So exciting!

Grow Your Mind

Grow Your Mind is a whole school wellbeing program promoting whole school flourishing. The program reminds us of the importance of looking after ourselves – filling our cups – so that we can face challenges with resilience and support others to flourish.

The beginning of the year is always a very busy time for families. Starting the school term is a big step in itself, but there are often other commitments including sport, swimming, music lessons and other after school activities that make scheduling the week quite the juggling act. Why not take an idea from the list below to take steps towards ‘filling your cup’ this week.

IT Department updates

Dear Parents,

As we know, the internet is an amazing learning tool for our students, however it is full of distractions and dangers. At PBC, we are constantly improving our on-campus systems to protect our students and keep them on task. Our network is protected by a layer 7 firewall that includes a web filter to block unwanted websites and applications.

Students that have programs called proxies installed on their devices will not be able to access the internet when they are joined to our wireless network. Proxies are pieces of software that aim to by-pass the firewall and allow access to blocked software, our firewall blocks this software and prevents internet access completely if a proxy is detected. Students need to remove these programs off their devices if they are having issues accessing the internet at the College.

Please note, we also block messenger at school too.

We also use Microsoft Intune to remotely deploy applications and security certificates. To join our network and access the internet, all student devices need to be enrolled into Intune and have security certificates loaded. We will load this software on student Macbooks, however parents of junior students need to download the ‘Intune Company Portal’ app before their iPad will be able to access the internet and learning websites like Mathletics and English Stars. Please check your email for instructions on how to download the App from the App Store, if you missed the email, please let me know and I’ll email you another copy. We just need the app downloaded; we’ll do the setup.

Thanks,

20 Days of Prep learning!

Our amazing preppies celebrated 20 days of learning last week and we had a very special visitor fly into our classrooms…. ZERO THE HERO! He will visit our class every 10th day and will leave a letter, a maths activity and sometimes more special surprises for us.

ZERO THE HERO is helping our preps learn about the number zero, counting by 1s and making groups of 10. We cannot wait to get to 100 days to see what will happen.

Year 3 & 4 News

As we find ourselves halfway through Term 1, it brings me great pleasure to witness the remarkable progress and positive transitions of our Year 3 and 4 students at Peregian Beach College. It’s great to see their enthusiasm, energy and eagerness to embrace new experiences and challenges.

We extend a warm welcome to all the new students who have joined our vibrant community. To capture the new students experiences so far, I had the pleasure of interviewing some of them to find what they enjoy about being a part of Peregian Beach College. Here are their responses:

Year 3: Miss H & Miss Davis

In English this term, students have been learning about ‘persuasive writing’. Students wrote a persuasive essay to convince Mr Dupuy that Year 3 deserve a ‘Friday Funday’. Four students delivered our persuasive essays directly to Mr Dupuy in his office. Now let’s see if their arguments have persuaded Mr Dupuy…

Year 4: Mrs Hemmings and Mrs Nealand

We would like to invite the Year 4 parents to join Mrs Nealand and Mrs Hemmings for an afternoon tea session on Friday, 15th of March at 2:20pm. This event aims to provide an opportunity for parents to get to know each other better, especially with the number of new students this year. Afternoon tea will be provided, and Year 4 students can utilise the playground area.

Basketball Academy

The Senior Basketball Academy boys have made our school proud with their remarkable performance in the first-ever CBSQ Regional Competition. Over the course of two days during week 5, our team participated in five intense games, emerging as undefeated champions.

Led by the guidance and expertise of Coach Jorden, the boys showcased exceptional skill, determination, and teamwork throughout the competition. Their commitment to excellence was evident in every game they played, reflecting the dedication and hard work they have put into their training.

Congratulations to Coach Jorden and each member of the team for their outstanding achievement. Their success not only highlights their prowess on the basketball court but also serves as a testament to their perseverance and sportsmanship.

Furthermore, we would like to express our gratitude to Mel, Mr. Wright, Mr. Cahalan, and Mr. Wareing for their invaluable support and encouragement. Their assistance leading up to and over the two days of the competition were instrumental in the boys’ success.

The triumph of our Senior Basketball Academy boys is a source of pride for our entire school community. It demonstrates the spirit of excellence and teamwork that defines our institution and inspires us all to reach for greater heights.

We’re buzzing with excitement to share some awesome news about our students who’ve been making waves in the sports scene.

A massive shoutout to Jarvis R., Ewan D., and Fin R. for securing a spot on the Sunshine Coast Under 12 Boys Basketball team. These guys have put in the work, and now they’re reaping the rewards. Check out the photo below to see the triumphant trio in action!

Zeke O., Duante M., Sam M., and Elijah O. have also clinched a spot on the Open Boys Sunshine Coast Basketball team. This is a second year in a row on the team for Zeke & Duante, with Sam & Elijah finding success their very first time trialling for the open boys team.

And let’s not forget Abbie L., who, at the age of 16, has made it into the Open Girls Sunshine Coast Football team. What a star! Her passion for the game and hard work have truly paid off.

These achievements not only reflect the talent of these students but also showcase the culture of excellence we have at PBC. As our talented student athletes gear up for the next stage of competition, we here at PBC wish them all the best.

A huge congratulations to Jarvis, Ewan, Fin, Zeke, Duante, Sam, Elijah, and Abbie! You’ve made us proud to be part of the PBC family.

Year 11 Art Excursion

On Friday of Week 5, students in Mrs Mac’s Year 11 Art students escaped the classroom for the day and headed off to the Gallery of Modern Art (GOMA) in Brisbane CBD. It was an exciting and stimulating day, as there was so much to see at the Fairy Tales exhibit! Some standout art pieces for the students were the magical ball gown dresses,, a room that was filled with “wooden” trees bursting out of the walls, the delicate glass slipper and the weird but beautiful creations of Patricia Piccini. Some of us huddled, fascinated, inside the Umbilical House, and watched in awe at the interactive films depicting fairy tales with a modern twist.

AFL Development Sessions

The Australian Football League (AFL) visited PBC this week to introduce students to AFL and the concept of lifelong learning through sport. Despite heavy rain over the weekend, the event proceeded with enthusiasm, and students actively participated in learning new skills. We extend our gratitude to the AFL representatives for their efforts and engagement with the students.

Families interested in enrolling their children in AFL can consider the “NAB Auskick program”  commencing Sunday, 3rd March at 8:30 am at Coolum Breakers AFL Club. The initial session is complimentary, followed by seven subsequent paid sessions. The program concludes with a Parent Vs Kids AFL match. Information flyers will be distributed to all Year 2-6 students after their AFL lesson.

The PBC Junior Choir is open to all students in Prep to Year 4, and a perfect place to start learning how to sing. The aims of the Junior Choir are to promote the enjoyment of singing together in a group, to develop vocal confidence and choral skills such as in-tune singing and aural perception, and to build life skills such as mindful listening, empathy, teamwork, and co-operation. Being a part of a cocurricular also teaches responsibility, discipline, and commitment through regular attendance at rehearsals and performances.
