Principal’s Report

WAYNE KENNEDY

What a great start to the 2021 academic year!

The campus has been a hub of energetic activity from day one, with many significant moments shared: new families, new teachers, new sporting programs, afternoon split assemblies (Junior School – Period 6, Middle/Senior – Period 5) and most importantly, new learning.

The students have promptly settled into their new classroom settings and are establishing positive academic routines.

The Junior School classrooms were exceptionally well presented, with much pride and organisational forethought having taken place throughout the holiday period from our dedicated Junior Teaching team.

The College has secured larger desks for all our Middle and Senior Secondary students, which has changed the layout, practicality and visual appeal of these classrooms.

The Kelly Library has also had furnishing reorganisation – with the goal of providing additional hot desk spaces for students to complete class, homework or assessment tasks during the second half of lunch.

Bridge to Bridge Fencing

The newly erected ‘bridge to bridge’ fencing at the front of the College has been well received by all members of the College community, not only for the enhancement of student safety but also for the aesthetic appeal. The afternoon flow within the ‘drop zone’ has improved.

Thank you to all families for accommodating the change. Could I please reinforce that at no point (morning and afternoon) are cars to be left unattended within the ‘drop-zone’.

The OSHC staff have also requested that parents not use the College playground equipment after the 2:55pm afternoon bell.

New Staff

We have a number of new staff joining our Teaching Team in 2021:

Mrs Amber Garratt – Prep

Suzanne Armstrong has been covering Mr Pontin’s classes, (and will continue to do so up until the 8th March 2021) when newly appointed teacher David Borchardt will be joining us. Mr Borchardt is currently completing his notice period at Maris Brothers College in Brisbane.
Mr Ben Conquest – (Education Support Officer) will be joining the Teaching Team from Monday 8th February 2021

Information Sessions

The College will be holding a variety of information sessions on Tuesday 9th February, which will give all parents the opportunity to meet with our Teaching Team, Leadership Team and Sporting Academy Coaching Team (Sunshine Coast Fire, Ash Tennis & Dance Lab).

Sporting Academy Parent Induction
4:00 – 5:00 pm: To be held in the Kelly Library. An overview will be provided before each individual sport breaks off into their respective groups, this will provide parents of Sporting Academy students a chance to meet the coaching team and ask any relevant questions.

Middle and Senior School – Year 5 to Year 12
5:00 – 6:00 pm: This session will be held in the Kelly Library.  All Middle and Senior teaching staff will be available during this session.

Leadership Team members: Alita Carpenter – Junior School/Enrichment Coordinator, Shane Dupuy – Middle School Coordinator & Gary Freudigmann – Senior School/Sports Academy Coordinator will be available throughout the induction afternoon to discuss their sectors.

Celebrating Wendy Machin

Although there was a considerable amount of positive energy being generated throughout the College at the commencement of the new academic year, the passing of long standing and highly respected member of our Teaching Team, Ms Wendy Machin, on Monday 25th January left all students and staff in a surreal state of disbelief and considerable sadness.

Ms Machin commenced at PBC in 2010 and taught Senior Secondary English and conducted the College’s Library program.  To state that Ms Machin was a gifted and exceptional teacher would be a gross understatement. Wendy was a perfectionist and a passionate educator who had placed her heart into every lesson and every student.

Wendy’s celebration of life ceremony was conducted at Gregson & Weight chapel at Noosaville Wednesday the 3rd February. The service was still under COVID restrictions and Ms Machin’s partner Greg had made arrangements to live-stream the ceremony in the Kelly Library. A number of our current Year 11 & 12 students attended, as did staff, parents and past students.

Wendy had led an extraordinary life, with travels and experience that we can only dream. Wendy did not waste a moment of time and had achieved the goal of work life balance that we can only aspire to.

Exceptional; teacher, colleague, friend and inspiration – Wendy Machin you are deeply missed.

Years 4 -10 Swimming Carnival

WAYNE KENNEDY

The College’s Years 4 -10 Swimming Carnival was held on Thursday 4th February – on the first scheduled date (not the fourth or fifth as in 2020) – under a cloud free day – no rain – no excessive wind – just sunshine.

The expansion of the College’s student body, and the friendly competitive nature within age events, novelty team events and house chants made for one of the most successful sporting carnivals experienced at the College.

Mr Wareing did an outstanding job of coordinating the Swimming Carnival with the support of Mr Freudigmann and practicum student Hayden Dory, plus the collaborative efforts of our hard-working Teaching Team on the day.

The carnival epitomised the advancement the College has made in recent time, and the shear quality of our students and Teaching Team.

The Age Champions will be presented with their medallions within next week’s assemblies.

We are in such an exceptional time in the College’s history that I feel privileged to be a part of it.

Land for Wildlife

JENNY DU TOIT

As PBC is a registered Land for Wildlife property, we are able to apply for grants for native plants and nesting boxes.

At the end of 2020, we were successful in applying for a grant for 3 more nesting boxes, which were installed in the holidays.

As you know many of our native birds and mammals, nest in tree hollows. These form in old trees that may be 50 to 100 years old. In the wild, a 200 year old tree could have as many as 20 hollows of various sizes.

With many trees being felled in our local area, nesting boxes are a great alternative for these animals. We already have 10 nesting boxes which are all occupied by birds, possums and squirrel gliders, which are important pollinators of our eucalypts, banksias and other flora. There are also signs of use by owlet nightjars.

We monitor the nesting boxes with a GoPro on a pole, controlled by an iPad, which enables the Land for Wildlife Gardening students to get an exciting glimpse of life inside a tree hollow.

Baby Golding has arrived!

With much delight we welcome baby Golding!

Our adored teacher Mrs Peta Golding started maternity leave at the end of term last year. We are excited to share Noah Graeme Golding has arrived right on time, born January 23rd at 10:47pm weighing 8 pounds and measuring 53cm long.

Students, staff and parents alike have shared in the excitement of Noah’s anticipated arrival throughout last year. We are all very much looking forward to meeting Noah when he makes his first visit to the school.

Welcome Noah, and stellar effort team Golding!

Year 4

RACHEL PRESTON

Getting Ready to Soar in Year 4

Well done to all the Year 4 students who have made a wonderful start to the new school year.

During week 1 we spent time welcoming new families to our class and carrying out some fun ice-breaker activities. We discussed and planned some learning goals for the term alongside sharing ideas about how to ‘light up’ our year with positivity and kindness.

It’s going to be a great year!

Sporting Achievements

ALEC WAREING

Over the school holiday period, some of our PBC students have participated/flourished in their chosen sports. Congratulations to all of the following students on their achievements.

If there is a sporting achievement you are proud of in or outside of school, please let Mr. Wareing know so your achievements can be celebrated.

Nate Mathews

Nate has been working hard to develop his basketball game in his free time both at home and at school. This has resulted in him being part of the Sunshine Coast Phoenix Under 14’s Basketball team. Nate and the Phoenix participated in the Premier League grading competition recently on the Gold Coast.

Nate’s team won their first game convincingly 58-44 and came from behind to win the second game 63-45. This automatically qualified them for Premier League this season. This is a huge achievement, congratulations Nate.

Cooper Renzulli & Benny Newcome

Cooper and Benny were both selected in the under 13 Sunshine Coast Wave Futsal team. The team participated in the annual Gold Coast International Futsal Championship, which is a 4-day event involving numerous teams. The boys played their hearts out and beat the Gold Coast Crusaders in the Grand Final 9-1. The Sunshine Coast Wave Head Coach said it was one of the best games our boys had ever played! The boys’ team were crowned as Champions after some really tough and somewhat gruelling games.

The boys will now take part in the State Championships in July. From these championships the Queensland State Squad will be chosen and after several months of training, the Queensland State Team will be picked. We can’t wait to get the next update and wish you all the best moving on to the next stage.
