Principal’s Report

SHANE DUPUY

Dear PBC families

On behalf of the PBC staff, may I extend a warm-hearted welcome to all existing and new members of the PBC community. 2023 promises to be yet another busy year for the staff and students as we continue to grow together in the pursuit of success and well-being.

I would like to take this opportunity to publicly acknowledge the outstanding achievements made by Mr. Wayne Kennedy over the past 5 years whilst leading the college as Principal. A long serving member of the college, Mr. Kennedy’s tireless work ethic, esteemed business acumen, professionalism, and passion for quality education, has enabled PBC to grow into the educational facility we all believe it could be. We are a child-centred institution that fosters the individual to be the best they can be, whilst embracing the spirit of community under the guidance of common-sense, respect, inclusivity, service of others and excellence. PBC students will be fortunate enough to continue to be guided by Mr. Kennedy as he steps back into a teaching role in the Middle School.

In the same vein, I would also like to recognise the work our Finance and Facilities Manager, Michelle Baker, achieved over her tenure at the college. Michelle’s expertise in keeping account of all building and financial matters through some extremely challenging times, particularly the last couple of years with floods, fires and covid, has been nothing short of outstanding. We thank her sincerely for her efforts and wish her the very best as she moves onto the next phase of her life, moving to the Fraser Coast to take up a role in the agricultural industry.

I would also like to welcome the following staff who will join us this year:

  • Ashleigh Morrison – Middle / Senior Coordinator
  • Lauren Collins- Inclusive Education Coordinator
  • Jacqueline Vos – Guidance Counsellor
  • Chloe Hetherington – Year 1
  • Mia Layton – Year 5
  • Finn Landre – P-5 PE, Year 9 & 10 Geography, Year 10 Mathematics
  • Suse Macnicol – Years 5-12 Art
  • Maddison Korac – Year 7 Science, Year 11 Biology
  • Isabel Fernades – Years 8 & 9 Mathematics
  • Jaryd Puttergill – Years 7 & 8 English
  • Tyson Bose – Years 6 & 9 HPE
  • Kristy Barker – Accounts
  • Adam Micallef – Building services
  • Josh Turley – Maintenance

PBC Community

As I move into the role of Principal, may I express my sincerest gratitude towards the PBC community for their support and best wishes. Having worked here for the past 16 years, I have been fortunate enough to work alongside some amazing educators, support personnel, administration staff and groundsmen, and am delighted that they will continue to help drive PBC. Whilst I expect to make the transition as seamless as possible, there will be several new initiatives implemented to ensure the professional standards of the teaching staff are being developed to offer the best holistic learning opportunities for students.

College Growth

With an influx of approximately 111 new students, there has already been the need to adjust some elements of the timetable. Whilst we continue to work through our growth phase, always be reminded, at the core of our mission is the success of your child and the relationships our staff build with our families. In the first instance, always chat with your child’s homeroom or subject teacher for clarity of concerns. Be respectful, be a good listener, and be fair.

Policy Amendments

Finally, we have made amendments to some policies to continue to provide a safe and regulated learning environment; please see the PBC website to familiarise yourself with these updates. One change that will affect students immediately, is regarding the use of electronic devices. Students are only allowed to use electronic devices whilst under direct supervision of a teacher. This means students will not be able to use devices such as laptops and phones from the moment they enter the college grounds unless they have permission from a teacher and remain under their direct supervision whilst in use. At the canteen, any student needing to use their phone to make electronic payments will take their phone out of their pocket when inside paying, and then return it to their pocket or bag once finished. If they need to check for important messages at morning tea or lunchtime, they must seek approval and stay with a teacher on yard duty until finished. Inappropriate or unauthorised use of devices will be closely monitored.

In conclusion, with many classes at or nearing capacity, the addition of 2 new sporting academies, and the building program forging ahead, 2023 promises to be another year of growth. However, for many, it will be a year of consolidation. For teachers and coaches, the education and sporting programs will be refined, whilst for students, the opportunity to find new or strengthen existing friendships is available. Let’s all make the most of it.

Instrumental Music Lessons

Due to the rapid growth in numbers and consequently, limited room availability, unfortunately, our instrumental music program will not be offered this semester. Hopefully, with the addition of more buildings expected to be available mid-year, an opportunity to welcome Mr. Gavin Hamburger back to the college for private lessons will come to fruition.

PIPS is looking at making a comeback!

The College Parent Information & Project Support (PIPS) group is a voluntary organisation that supports the College in the promotion of generosity, community and hospitality. We also raise funds for donation to the school. Any parent or friend of a current student at the College is eligible for membership of the PIPS team.

The PIPS meet as required throughout the year to discuss and arrange upcoming events. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to attend these meetings.

The objectives of the PIPS are:

  • To bring the parents and friends of Peregian Beach College, together socially to develop the PBC family
  • To promote co-operation between parents and friends and the College in its external activities
  • To promote or participate in fundraising projects or activities for the growth and development of the College
  • To act informally as a forum through which parents’ views can be presented and passed on to the College administration.

Angie Stinton, a long-time supporter of the college, will be leading the PIPS group for 2023. If you are interested in hearing more about PIPS, please complete the attached Jotform by clicking here and we will get in contact with you.

PBC Carpark

With an increasing number of students, naturally, there is an increase in the amount of traffic coming into the college at the start and the end of the day. Pleasingly, parents are displaying patience and I am grateful to those parents who are waiting for the OSHC bus to arrive before entering the ring road to pick up their children. However, it has been reported to me that there are incidences of careless behaviour in our carpark daily. Some parents have been entering the carpark at unsafe speeds, texting or on the phone whilst driving, and driving with unrestrained children. Seemingly, it’s only a matter of time before an accident occurs. Could all PBC families ensure they are driving in a manner that respects and protects the PBC community.

Junior School

ALITA CARPENTER

Middle/Senior School

ASHLEIGH MORRISON

Welcome Junior School families, to what is already looking to be a fantastic year ahead. Our year has begun extremely well regarding the students settling into their teaching and learning spaces, units of work in all subject areas have begun, and the students are already working hard in classes with big smiles on their faces.

Below are a few things that we will cover in more detail at our information session next week; however, in case you are unable to make that session, I have included some of this information for you here.

Next week on Tuesday the 7th of February, at 3:15pm to 4.00pm, we are holding a Junior School Information session. All families are welcome to attend; however, we encourage families to find alternative arrangements for their children where possible. If bringing your child along is unavoidable, please ensure that they sit with you quietly and respectfully so that everybody can hear the information without any distractions.

Please ensure your child is always wearing their correct full school uniform, including shoes. Formal leather (or leather look alike) shoes must be worn with the formal uniform. Joggers can be worn with the HPE uniform on HPE days. If your child is in the incorrect uniform, they will be spoken to about this and you will receive a reminder email from your child’s class teacher. If the correction to the uniform isn’t resolved, you will then receive correspondence from myself. If incorrect uniform choices are made that pose a safety risk, please note that the office may phone you to come and rectify the situation.

Please remember that if you have a question or concern about your child’s academic learning or well-being relating to school, that your first contact point is your child’s classroom teacher. If the class or subject teacher is unable to resolve your concern, they may refer you to make an appointment with myself.

As per the Principal’s email last week, please do not drop your child to school before 8:15 in the morning. Teacher supervision is only in place from 8.15am. After school, all students are to move off campus as soon as possible. The front of the school is not an appropriate or safe area for students to play after school.

School assemblies start at 1:15pm until 1.45pm every 2nd (even) week. At these assemblies, teachers celebrate student achievements, birthdays and enjoy coming together as a Junior School group. Please note that families are welcome to attend. Your child’s classroom teacher will alert you to when these assemblies include your child.

I look forward to meeting those families who are new to the school, and I am sure our school community will make you feel welcome. Please introduce yourself when you see me around. If you have any special skills that you would like to share with us as a school, do let us know what these are and how they might be included to enhance our PBC education model.

Beginnings and endings in our lives are sometimes linear, with a clear start and clear conclusion. Other times, beginnings and endings can be cyclical in nature, enabling renewal and growth. No doubt all ends of the spiral are well and truly alive within our PBC family as we commence the school year. Witnessing the arrival of new and returning students over the past two weeks reminds me to be mindful of the range of emotions at play in the young people we educate. Some have tackled their first days with joy and excitement, others with apprehension and doubt, and others with a mixture of these. The common element in each of their stories is the family orientated environment alive here at Peregian Beach College.

Although my time at the College so far has been brief, I have already experienced a real sense of the core values of the PBC identity – Excellence, inclusivity, reflective practice, and service of others and the gentle and caring hospitality that resonates within the PBC Family. As a mum to two young people navigating the world of schooling, such an educational environment is very heartening and reassuring.

Congratulations Year 12 2022

Our Year 12 cohort of 2022 performed highly in their results at the end of last year. We would like to acknowledge the hard work of not only the students, but the teachers, support staff, parents and carers who guided, assisted, challenged and supported these students on their academic journeys at the College.

Well done, seniors of 2022; you should be extremely proud of yourselves.

Year 12 2023: The journey begins

I would like to formally welcome our new students and members of the Basketball and Football academies who have arrived to complete their final year of studies here at PBC.

On Friday 27th of January the year 12 class of 2023 received their senior guernsey’s with each of the year 12’s formally acknowledged. The Peregian Beach College staff are proud of our year 12 students and looking forward to seeing what they will accomplish in 2023.

Year 5-12 Information Afternoon– 7th Februrary

PBC warmly invites you to meet the middle and senior school staff who will be working with your children this year. The afternoon session commences at 4pm and concludes at 4:45pm.

Swimming Carnival

ALEC WAREING

The Year 4-12 PBC Swim Carnival was a huge success! The event was held on a beautiful day and brought together a large number of students from across the school. The excitement and energy in the air was palpable, and the atmosphere was electric.

The swimmers put on an amazing show, displaying their skills in a variety of events. From freestyle to butterfly, the competitors showed off their impressive swimming abilities, and the spectators were thoroughly entertained. Aside from the competitive events, there were also a number of fun participation races and relays that added to the overall atmosphere of the carnival.

The Year 4-12 PBC Swim Carnival was not just about the swimming, though. It was also an opportunity for the students to come together, make new friends, and create memories that will last a lifetime. The camaraderie and spirit of the day were truly inspiring, and it was excellent to witness the joy and exhilaration that was shared by all.

The Year 4-12 PBC Swim Carnival was an unforgettable event, and a testament to the school’s commitment to fostering a positive and inclusive community. The hard work and dedication of the students, teachers, and parents who made this event possible cannot be overstated. We look forward to next year’s carnival, and all the amazing memories it will bring!

Sporting Academy

MELVYN WILKES

Peregian Beach College in partnership with Sunshine Cost Sporting Academy are delighted to announce the roll-out of it’s Elite Basketball and Netball Full-Time Academies.

We have 38 athletes across the 2 codes which are now combining their academic studies and elite level sport at Peregian Beach College.
Our Basketball Academy is being led by Sunshine Coast Australian Youth International Basketball Player, Jorden Page, whilst our Netball Academy is being led by Natalie Jarrott, who has been part of the Sunshine Cost Lightning set-up over the last couple of years.
Both academies have hit the ground running, with additional athletes being offered positions in both sports on a weekly basis.
Sporting Director Melvyn Wilkes said ‘We finally got both sports rolled out at the same time for commencement of Term 1 2023, although massively challenging, both additions have created an additional buzz around the locality as we compliment the already successful Football and Dance programs at PBC’.
Watch this space for regular updates and be sure to follow the social media pages for the ‘Sunshine Coast Sporting Academy’, which includes YouTube updates.
