Principal’s Report

WAYNE KENNEDY

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

The first weeks of Term 3 have commenced with considerable energy, academic engagement, and positive collaborations.  The Parent/Teacher meetings undertaken earlier this week, allowed opportunity to discuss those key issues affecting students’ academic development; with additional strategies to supplement established practices, being recognised in going forward.  The volume of meetings undertaken was less in number, in comparison with our Term 2 Parent/Teacher program, however each interview proved valuable from all stakeholders.

As conveyed within email correspondence last week, Mrs Hayley Clifton (Guidance Counsellor/Wellbeing Coordinator) has joined Mrs Kimberley Iliffe (Youth Worker) to enhance our Health and Wellbeing programs.  This week, Alita Carpenter (Enrichment Coordinator P-12) and I meet with Hayley and Kimberley to effectively organise fresh foundations for our Student Services Team. New processes and policies are being developed to allow specialist psychological assessment, counselling, intervention, and referral services. New wellbeing programs are being discussed for inclusion in our Life Skills program. It has been a very productive week in the wellbeing space.

Mind and Movement

The Mind and Movement programs were successfully undertaken this week. The enthusiasm from students and the Teaching Team towards the new Movement activities (and a glorious blue sky winters day) had the College a buzz on Thursday afternoon.  Feedback from students involved in skateboarding, fishing, golf and especially the dance club was glowing.  The positive health and wellbeing outcomes being generated by the Mind and Movement programs is exceeding initial expectations and proving a considerable motivator in the student’s passion and desire for learning.

Basketball

On Thursday evening the College held the Sunshine Coast Sporting Academy/PBC Basketball Academy ‘Roll-out’ session. The ‘Roll-Out’ session was to provide prospective Sporting Academy basketball students with a clear timeframe and plan regarding programmed trial sessions.  The initial trial days will take place this term on Monday the 22nd & 29th of August, and Monday 5th September at the Sunshine Coast University. Additional trial days will also take place in Term 4, with dates confirmed in forthcoming editions of this newsletter.  Trial days will comprise of Sports Science testing and data collection, academic classes, and practical training. For further information please contact Sunshine Coast Sporting Academy Director Melvyn Wilkes (sport@pbc.qld.edu.au or 5448 1722).

In further Sporting Academy news, six of our students are currently representing the Sunshine Coast at the Under 12’s State Championships. The students remained undefeated yesterday, defeating South-West and South-Coast teams. I look forward to sharing the overall result in the next edition.

I would also like to acknowledge the accomplishment of our School Captain Kyan B. who has been selected in the Queensland 17-19 Years Boys Football Team, to compete in the National School Boys Football Championships in Sydney in mid-August.  I was extremely proud of Kyan’s achievement, as Kyan was the original Sunshine Coast Fire Sporting Scholarship recipient back in 2016.  Kyan is also achieving results of excellence within the Year 12 academic program.  The overarching goal of our Sporting Academy programs is for all our students to hopefully be in the same position as Kyan – excelling in both academic and sporting realms.  On behalf of the College, I wish Kyan every success at the National Football Competition.

I also wish all Sporting Academy students competing in the Southern QLD Champion of Champions Futsal Competition at Nissan Arena next week all the best.

The expansion of the College carpark is getting closer to its completion, and we anticipate that staff cars will be delegated to the new space by the end of next week. This will assist in parent parking availability and traffic flow within our main car park.

Library News

Dear Families

The Scholastic Book Club Issue 5 was delivered last week to all Kindy – Year 6 students.  Scholastic have a worthwhile book offer in this issue if you wanted to take advantage of free books with your online order. Please note
that ordering will close Sunday 31 July.

The 2022 CBCA Book Week celebration will occur in Week 6 this term.  The many short-listed books for:

* new illustrator

* picture book of the year

* book of the year – early childhood

* book of the year – younger readers

have started to arrive and are on display in the library.  Classes are reading them during their library lessons.  Each student will be given the chance to vote on their favourite book in the lead up to Book Week.

Our dedicated art teachers, Miss Carpenter and Mr Green, are creating artworks around the short-listed books with their students.  These will be on display in the library and will be judged by Mr Kennedy.  Winners and runner ups are to be announced at the Book Week Parade.

Book Week Parade will be held on Tuesday 23 August at 1.15pm in the Kelly Library

Parents and families are invited to attend the parade and to experience seeing our students in their Book Week costumes.  Students are definitely encouraged to dress up either in a costume relevant to this year’s theme or as their favourite book character. Already I have had numerous children run their ideas past me and seen many students flick through library books for inspiration.  We will run a Most Creative Costume Competition.  I am anticipating a colourful day!

Lastly, I would like to say thank you to those families who have donated books to our library.  I am appreciative and enjoy seeing our library grow.

Prep & Year 5

JULIA BLAHUTA & HEATH CAHALAN

STEM/Fairy-tale Lesson

This Term Prep are looking at Fairy Tales, with this week being the story of the Three Little Pigs. Prep teamed up with Year 5 to create a house that could withstand the huff and puff of the Big Bad Wolf (a fan). Mr Cahalan and Ms Blahuta were particularly impressed with their STEM skills. Congratulations to Sam (Prep) and Zac (Yr 5) for winning the STEM challenge.

Year 3

SAVANNAH DAVIS

Maths

Students have been learning about chance and probability in Maths this week.

Year 3 students completed a fun activity on probability by using MnM’s. They wrote the chances of selecting a colour from their packet and presented their results as a bar graph. Students were very keen to eat their MnM’s at the end of the lesson.

Year 5

HEATH CAHALAN

Stats in Sport!

This week, Year 5 ditched the textbooks and grabbed a stopwatch and measuring tape to complete a series of fitness related tests. Students completed the push up challenge, standing jump test, reaction time test, ab-crunch challenge, and vertical hang.  They recorded their results in a table and presented their information in a variety of graphs. A special mention to Charlie S who got 4 minutes on her vertical hang!

Movement

Dance

Dance this week comprised of contemporary dance.  The students rehearsed a lyrical piece before choreographing their own dance choosing their own music.  Miss Preston and Miss Tania enjoyed their creativity, ability to express their movements and adapt their dancing to the rhythm of the music.

Fishing

Our keen and eager fishing enthusiasts spent a lovely afternoon along the Noosa River.  We had one fish successfully landed and released.  We did manage to feed a lot of others fish prawns and white bait that they were able to sneak off our hooks.

Not sure who had more fun, the students or Shae, Mrs Hemmings and Ms Mercer.
