Principal’s Report

WAYNE KENNEDY

Welcome to Term 2.

Week one saw a refreshed Teaching Team attend a very productive Professional Development Day on 19th April.  The key elements of the College’s Mission Statement were the focus, with mixed sector group discussions on: What we do well at the College? and What improvements need to be implemented? The College’s Pedagogical Framework was also addressed with continual improvement the focus. The readdressing of the Minds program’s goal – to ensure the enhancement of specific learning needs that cannot be easily met within the classroom – with a focus on mathematical, literacy and social skill development were reinforced. Final preparations were also implemented for the Movement program initiative. New Secondary Mathematics teacher, Mr Luke Bowers was welcomed to the PBC Teaching Team.

Students also commenced week one well rested, with prompt engagement in new curriculum content. Student Representative Council members were sworn into their SRC roles in a combined SRC Assembly and Anzac Service conducted on Thursday 21st April. I would like to acknowledge School Captains Kyan B. and Nash W. for their quality Master of Ceremonies role.  I would also like to acknowledge Kyan and Nash for representing Peregian Beach College at the Coolum/Peregian RSL Dawn Service, along with Tyler G, Nate R, Blake R, Flynn R, Jeremy S, Nina D and wreath layers Tobias and Cooper R. Thank you also to Mr Freudigmann and Mr Bowers for their attendance at the Dawn Service.

On Thursday, 28 April 2022 the inaugural Movement program was undertaken, with students engaging in:

Junior School Years 1 – 4 (on site activities)

  • Football (Sunshine Coast Fire instructor)
  • Tennis (External provider – Sarah & Glenn Irwin)
  • Sporting Games (PBC Junior School Teachers)

Middle & Senior School (Years 5 – 11)

  • Surf Lifesaving – Noosa Surf Lifesaving Club
  • Gymnastics – Noosa Gymnastics
  • Yoga – Samantha Williams
  • Learn to Surf – Coolum Beach
  • Walking Club – Middle School Teaching Team
  • Senior School Supported Study

The feedback from students and the Teaching Team was extremely positive, with respect to the quality of the instruction and student engagement in the physical activities.  Modifications to bus schedules are to take place for the Walking Club students, whose exercise time was restricted by transportation – College buses to be implemented in Week 3.  The Leadership Team have been extremely pleased with the initial outcomes being achieved within the Minds and Movement initiatives and are focusing on continuing to tighten and improve the processes to enhance further student achievement.  We have received several requests from parents asking to collect their child/ren directly from their Movement activity locations.  While we understand this may be more convenient for some families, from a duty of care and risk management perspective, the College requires all students to be transported to and from their activities each week as the program operates during school hours.  We hope that you can appreciate the additional administration and heightened risk that would come with releasing students from various locations on these days. The proposed inclusion of skateboarding, golf, and fishing within Term 3 Movement selections, have been positively conveyed to Administration.

As reported in the last Emu Chronicle, NAPLAN testing will take place from the 10th May 2022.  The Kelly Library will be the location for the NAPLAN testing, with the Year 3 & 5 cohorts, and the Year 7 & 9 cohorts having tests conducted in morning and middle sessions within the nine-day NAPLAN test window. The test schedule for Year 3, 5, 7 and 9 is as follows:

To consolidate, within the NAPLAN guidelines for principals and coordinators, it states that ‘It is unacceptable to exert influence on parents/carers to withdraw their children from testing.’ (ACARA).  However, ‘…students may be withdrawn from the testing program by their parents/career. This is a matter for consideration by individual parent/carers in consultation with their child’s school. Withdrawals are intended to address issues such as religious beliefs and philosophical objections to testing.’ (ACARA).  The relevant Record of parent/carer withdrawal: Form S2003 is available at Administration.

Far North Queensland Youth Cup

Closely following the success within the Sunshine Coast Schools Football competition (Wednesday 30th March) the Football Academy students travelled to Cairns in the holiday period, to play in the Far North Queensland Youth Cup. The Under 11’s and Under 14’s were victorious, winning the finals and the Under 12’s being runners up, based on penalties in the final. Mr Wilkes and his coaching staff were extremely proud of the professional sportsmanship displayed throughout the tournament. Thank you to the dedicated Football Academy families for supporting our students in travel and accommodation arrangements. The Sporting Academy change room facilities are now on site, with tradesman in the process of completing the fit out in coming weeks.

Parent Teacher Meetings / Building Restoration

Buildings 2 & 3 restoration is progressing with plastering nearing completion, painting to commence next week with flooring to be implemented shortly after.  The Junior School Teaching Team are all eagerly anticipating that moment in time when the Junior school can return to their classrooms – we are getting closer!

Parents/Teacher Interviews are scheduled for next week, on Tuesday 3rd May and Wednesday 4th May. The Parent/Teacher interview booking links is https://peregianbc.schoolzineplus.com/view-session/17.  If parents are unable to attend on these dates, I encourage parents to contact teachers to plan for a mutually convenient time to meet.  All members of the Leadership Team will be in attendance and look forward to having discussions with parents.

I wish all an enjoyable Labour Day holiday on Monday, and our District Cross Country representatives’ success next week!

Library News

Welcome to Term 2

Issue 3 of Scholastic Book Club is out now and was sent home last week.  It is filled with some great reads for all ages.  I notice that the amusing book ‘You Don’t Have To Like It, You Just Have To Eat It’ has been a popular purchase so far!  This picture book explores the importance of trying new food (yes! those nasty green veges) because you never know – you may actually like it!

Please complete your orders online.  This issue closes Sunday 8 May and is delivered approximately two weeks later.

The College received a generous donation from local Sunshine Coast Author, Louise Guy.  We now have two copies of Books 1-7 of The Crafters’ Club on our bookshelves for our students to borrow.  Our Year 3 class wrote individual letters of thanks to Louise which she loved reading.  Thanks Louise!

May I also send out a special thanks to all the generous families who are dropping off bags of books to go into the Kelly Library.  I am grateful that your children’s books are being recycled and filling our library shelves.   If you have any books that your family has finished with, please feel free to bring them in – donated books are happily received and much appreciated.

Yours in reading

Term 1 was the first full Term working under the new Senior School Assessment Policy. The policy has been developed based on the assessment requirements for Yr 11 and 12 outlined by the Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority. Overall, the transition process to this new policy has been successful and students are beginning to embrace the change. The PBC Assessment Policy was sent out to parents earlier in the year, however, if you did not receive one please find it, the assessment extension forms and change of subject forms on our website or contact me or your students Form teacher.

Year 2

EMMA BOURNE

Earth Day

Year 2 did some lovely work for Earth Day!

Year 5 Science

HEATH CAHALAN

Marshmallow Melt!

For Term 2 Science, Year 5 are looking Earth’s place in the Solar System. This week, we built contraptions that sped up the melting rate of a marshmallow. Not only did students have to demonstrate the power of the sun, but also implement 21st century skills such as collaboration, innovation, and creativity. What a sweet science experiment…

MIND – Movie Makers

SAVANNAH DAVIS

Lights, Camera, Action!

In movie makers this week, students worked in groups to write a storyboard and create a mini movie. Each student was given a role during the film making: director, actor and camera crew. Students also had to follow a set criteria in order to produce a good quality movie.

Music News!

SAMANTHA RYAN
Year 4 have spent the first three weeks of this term developing their knowledge about music arrangements. Last week they learnt a new song called “Pitch and Pattern” and in groups deconstructed the song and made their own arrangement. They decided who would play each part and sing the harmonies, which sections they would use for the beginning, middle and end and who would signal them to start and finish. The students worked together brilliantly, each holding their own parts in the song and the final performances showed their hard work and exceptional teamwork! Wonderful work Year 4!

Sporting Achievements

Noosa District Football

Congratulations to the PBC students who represented Noosa District at the Sunshine Coast Regional Trials. It is great to see you reap the rewards of all your hard work and dedication to your craft.
