Principal’s Report

SHANE DUPUY

Change is in the air

With Spring just around the corner, we are all looking forward to welcoming some warmer weather. Not that it has been a cold Winter by any stretch of the imagination, but a little more humidity, more regular mowing, a chance to don the boardies and just a t-shirt, and the footy finals about to kick off, it’s a great time of the year. In a school setting, we are faced with a similar time of change. Management outlines their strategic direction of the College for the coming year, students moving into the senior school select their elective subjects whilst seriously starting to think about their future pathways, and the College leadership team have to place staff for the coming year. As always, there are new families looking to enter the College and some we will farewell. Similarly, we will seek to employ new teachers as others depart. To say there’s never a dull moment is an understatement. For someone who considers himself quite ‘old school’ with a methodical approach that’s a little averse to change, I must say, the change in season and the landscape of the College, I find myself both reflective and just a little bit excited at what lies ahead.

PBC Community

Over the past few weeks, there have been some fantastic opportunities for our PBC community to come together and enjoy each other’s company. Last week, our Middle School students went off to camp to enjoy some time together whilst experiencing some fantastic activities. The benefits of attending camps are well-documented and I extend thanks to all the teachers who gave up their time to support the students with this opportunity. Special thanks must go to Mr. Cahalan and Mr. Hicks who organised each camp.

On Wednesday afternoon, the Prep – Y6 students came together to celebrate Book Week. The students looked fantastic as they paraded in front of their peers and families, dressed up as their favourite book characters. The costumes were amazing, and may I extend many thanks to the parents who no doubt spent a great deal of time bending pipe-cleaners, colouring hair, painting faces and rummaging through dress up boxes to dress their child. Miss Brooke, who has been filling in for our regular librarian Ms. Tania (who has been skipping her way around Europe with a happy-go-lucky travel buddy), did an amazing job of creating a fantastic spectacle for students to fully immerse themselves in this experience. All Prep – Y6 staff continued their tradition of upstaging many of their students with their costumes and a special thanks to Mr. Wright who once again, ensured the Book Week was an upbeat, active, engaging, and fun PBC event.

As mentioned in my introduction, on Wednesday afternoon, our Y10 students and parents came together for the Subject Selection Information Session. A host of presenters including delegates from Sunshine Coast University, Barrington Business College, Stay and Play USA and Fit Education presented some fantastic information to the cohort. Whilst the session was invaluable for students, my favourite part was having the opportunity to mingle with new and longstanding PBC families and chatting about the progress of the College and their child in a welcoming and relaxed forum.

Japanese News

SAMANTHA WILLIAMS

From July 29th till August 10th, 18 Japanese female students and one teacher visited Peregian Beach College from Josei Gakuen Highschool, our sister school in Osaka, Japan.

It was such a fun two weeks.  During their stay, students joined our students in various activities.  We had 18 wonderful PBC students accompany the Josei students for classroom integration activities.  The Japanese students also joined in on a fun Japanese Scavenger Hunt with the year 7 students (all in Japanese!) with Australian-style prizes.  They also enjoyed origami and calligraphy with Year 2’s.  Throughout their visit, they also visited Australia Zoo, went surfing, learnt how to play the digeridoo and more!

During this time, the Japanese students were billeted to some wonderful families in our community who very generously welcomed them into their homes.  This was a very enjoyable and rich experience for all.

Our relationship with Josei Gakuen HIghshool is an integral part of our school language program and one which gives our students the opportunity to have real-world connections with children from other nations.  And learn the relevance of learning another language.

Strong friendships and long-lasting memories were made.  It was a precious learning experience for all involved.  And an important one to reconnect with our Japanese sister school.

We are all looking forward to the next visit, and when we can get the opportunity to travel to Japan!

Thank you to everyone involved.  Especially our host families and buddies!

Sunshine Coast Sporting Academy – High Performance and Sports Science Testing

Our academy athlete performance is monitored by a full-time high-performance sport science team led by our in-house Sport Scientist and Head of Performance, Associate Professor Bruno Pena Couto.

The images below are from the ongoing ‘Testing’ that is now being delivered as part of our ‘Performance and Sports Science‘ testing, conducted on a weekly basis as part of our program based at the Peregian Beach College.

We guarantee there is no other program that tests, monitors and manages their full-time or part-time athletes the way we do through our full-time academy. We are honoured to work with Professor Mark Sayers and the team from University of the Sunshine Coast (UniSC) High Performance program, the level of details this adds to our performance program is very valuable and highly desired. Along with Associate Professor Bruno Pena Couto we now add the UniSC as a sporting partner.

The Australian Netball Championships

On Tuesday 22 August 2023 the netball academy girls, together with coach Nat had the fun opportunity to attend the Australian Netball Championships at Morayfield Sport & Event Centre.

The event aims to bring together all of Australia’s emerging netball talent, including athletes, coaches, umpires and officials, for talent identification and development looking toward Suncorp Super Netball and international levels.

The netball academy girls were lucky enough to watch match warmups as well as the SUNSHINE COAST LIGHTNING BOLTS v COLLINGWOOD MAGPIES games.

What an opportunity!

CAMP

Year 7 & 8 – Mr Hicks

The Year 7 and 8 Camp was a fantastic venture that saw our students embarking on a memorable journey to Boulder Creek for three nights. According to all the feedback received, it’s safe to say that they had an absolute blast. The pupils from PBC showcased immense pride in their school throughout the trip, and their conduct was nothing short of excellent. It’s heartening to note that they not only represented our school admirably but also exhibited outstanding behaviour at all times.

The array of activities that the students engaged in was truly diverse, ensuring that everyone found something to excite them. There were exhilarating undertakings like the giant swing, leap of faith, mid ropes challenge, tower of tremble, archery, and even a creek exploration adventure. These experiences weren’t just about having fun; they provided an avenue for students to learn new skills both on their own and as part of a team. Stepping out of the classroom and into the great outdoors allowed them to disconnect from their devices and truly immerse themselves in the beauty of nature, all the while surrounded by their closest friends.

As the sun set each evening and dinner concluded, the festivities continued. The disco was a hit, with students dancing their hearts out and creating memories that will undoubtedly last a lifetime. Watching the Matilda’s play brought cheers and excitement, adding a touch of sportsmanship to the mix. And, perhaps one of the most cherished moments, sitting around the campfire, sharing stories and laughter, forging connections that extended beyond the confines of the classroom.

In this environment, we saw certain students rise to the occasion, embracing leadership roles within their small groups. These newfound skills and confidence will undoubtedly serve them well both within the school setting and in their sporting pursuits. It’s important to highlight that for some, this camp was a true test of courage. Overcoming fears of heights, separation from family, and even temporarily parting with their beloved devices showcased immense personal growth.

As the camp concludes, we sincerely hope that all students will take a moment to reflect upon the positive facets of this experience. The memories made, the challenges conquered, and the friendships nurtured will surely leave a mark. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all the students who participated, and we, the teachers who were fortunate to be part of this journey, are immensely grateful for the enriching camp experience that was made possible by each and every one of them.

MIND

Junior Drama – Mrs Golding

Junior Drama students meet every Tuesday afternoon during MIND sessions. The group have enjoyed participating in the weekly games and skits to build confidence and develop their public speaking and performing skills. With a mixture of Year 2, 3, 4 and 5 students, it’s been a great way to make new friends too! Currently, the students are working on learning lines and acting in two different plays called ‘Triple Trouble’ and ‘Creepy Cat Club’.
