Principal’s Report

WAYNE KENNEDY

The last day of Term 3 is upon us,

with the commencement of the September/October school holidays eagerly awaited by students and the Teaching Team alike.

Compared to Principals in the southern states I am grateful that the College was able to achieve the many planned events and activities scheduled throughout the term.

Sporting Academy

On the Noosa Show holiday, I had the opportunity to watch the Sporting Academy Senior Primary Boys Football Team (Under 12’s) compete in the final of the South-East Queensland Primary School competition. I was very proud of the sportsmanship our students displayed both on and off the sporting field. The student’s exhibited considerable skill and outstanding teamwork and were victorious within this competition. Peregian Beach College after implementing the Sporting Academy program, a little over 12 months ago, are the best Senior Primary Boys Team in Queensland (as there is no higher competition). I would like to commend Melvyn Wilkes and his fine coaching team for offering such a quality program.

Our Sporting Academy Dance students also achieved quality results over the same weekend with Zoe T. winning her competitions at the Gympie Eisteddfod and Chloe B triumphant in the jump competition.

Year 3 & 4 Camp

The Year 3 & 4’s annual Maranatha camp (Yandina) had exceptional camp weather earlier this week, with student and Teaching Team feedback on camp facilities, activities and culinary options all getting a large tick of approval. Joining in for a day, the Year 2’s were also in agreement and already look forward to attending this camp next year.

There were many camp stories being shared within classrooms and in the playground on Thursday, with friendship fun and the achievements of camp activity challenges happily conveyed.

Term 3

On Thursday 9th September, the Secondary School (7 -12) experienced a live Shakespearian performance presented by the ‘Shake n Stir’ theatre company.

The production was booked by Senior English teacher Rosanne Thomas, to support the Senior Secondary English program; however, it proved an extremely positive experience for all students in attendance.

The opportunity within Covid times to witness a live theatre performance was greatly valued.

Prep Orientation

The first of our Prep Orientation sessions were conducted on the 16th & 17th September, with Alita, Amber and Julia introducing our 2022 Prep families to the Prep facilities.

The orientations sessions provided valuable opportunity for families to ask those questions of reassurance, to hopefully alleviate any concerns associated with the transition from Kindy programs to the ‘Big’ school program.

Thank you, Shae and the Junior Teaching Team, for your organisation of these favourable sessions.

Senior School

Senior Mathematics teacher, Mr Tim Roberts, has tendered his resignation and Mr James Wright will commence teaching the Senior Mathematics program (General Mathematics, Mathematics Methods and a Short Numeracy Course) to our Year 10, 11 & 12 students from the commencement of Term 4. New Teaching Team member Mr Edgar Choy will be running the College Science program (Years 7 – 10). Mr Choy’s Guidance Counsellor qualifications will also be transited to support Kimberley in 2022.

The Year 11 & 12 cohort will be relocating to Building 2 (at the front of the College) at the commencement of Term 4. The Year 12 students will commence a trial examination block in the first week of Term 4, to assist in finalising preparations for the QCAA External Examinations scheduled to commence on Friday 22nd October 2021. Mr Freudigmann and the Senior Teaching Team have worked diligently to ensure our Senior students are well prepared for the final weeks of their secondary schooling. It is anticipated that the holiday period will provide uninterrupted study opportunities for the Year 12 cohort, with results from the Mock block (PE & Art examination commencing on Tuesday 5th October) anticipated to provide valuable information for the consolidation of course content within Weeks 2 & 3 lessons.

Junior School

Samantha Mann (Junior School HPE teacher) will be implementing the College Learn to Swim program in Term 4. Mr Wareing will be forwarding information to Junior School families today.

The Reed Play Company removed our Junior and Middle School playground equipment in Week 8 and remain on schedule to commence the installation of the new Junior playground and Fitness station during the holiday period. The College sincerely appreciates the generosity provided by the Reed family with this project, but also must acknowledge the quality communications and consistent positivity conveyed by David throughout the process.

Whilst drafting this Emu Chronicle submission, the following email was forwarded “…I’ve just opened XXX’s NAPLAN testing results and couldn’t be happier with her results. To see her above national average in all categories and off the chart for her reading, grammar & punctuation. Made my day!” It has also made my day. Well done to all students on their NAPLAN results.

Term 3 has seen many successful academic and sporting moments, throughout the College, and I eagerly look forward to Term 4, to witness further growth and prosperity. Enjoy your holiday – it is well deserved!

Book Fair

Book Fair coming in October

The Kelly Library will have the privilege of hosting a Book Fair this year.

The books will be available for purchase by students and parents throughout the week and will include picture books, early chapter books, activity books, non fiction and junior fiction.

Keep an eye in the Emu Chronicle for times you will be able to come in to browse and purchase. It may even be an opportune time for families to purchase gifts in readiness for Christmas.

Prep Explorers

The Prep Explorers have been busy learning about measurement in Mathematics.

Through water-play they have explored capacity and most recently practised estimating and measuring mass with balancing scales.

We have also been practising ‘Team work’

We are learning to communicate, compromise and share with others to achieve a common goal. We are proud of how we worked together to create a box animal!

Skeletal Models – Maths

In groups, Year 6 students used spaghetti and marshmallows to construct skeletal models of 3D objects.

Students then used the framework of the 3D shape to identify the number of faces, edges and vertices.

The Year 6 students enjoyed this lesson!

PBC Football Results

Please congratulate the new South-East Queensland Senior Primary School Champions:

First the boys became the Noosa district champs, then became the Sunshine Coast champs, and now the South East Queensland Champs. Unfortunately, at primary school level, there is no higher competition then this one, so well done boys, Mitchell Cattermole and Melvyn Wilkes

Also, all 3 Futsal teams that competed in the Champions of Champions Futsal competition at Nissen Arena, Brisbane, reached the quarter, semi, or grand final in their respective age groups. This has now qualified all teams to compete in the Australasian Futsal Competition in November. Well done boys, and coaches: Tom, Ben and Melvyn.
