Principal’s Report

WAYNE KENNEDY

It is quite amazing to reflect on the changes that can transpire from one Emu Chronicle edition to the next.

The past two weeks have presented many challenges however, I am extremely proud of the way the College community navigated the Queensland Government directives and provided continuity of learning for our students.

The strength and compassion within our educational community continues to shine through when uncertainty requires prompt and appropriate actions.

Thank you: students, parents, teachers, educational support officers, and administration staff for your remarkable efforts to continually achieve the quality educational outcomes to which the College aspires during unique and unprecedented circumstances.

Parent / Teacher Interviews

To accommodate the current restrictions around Covid, Parent / teacher interviews will now be offered either as a video conference using the Microsoft Teams platform, or by phone call.

For video conferencing parents will receive a notification from a member of the Teaching Team that a parent can then accept to secure the time and date of the video conference. Not all parents are required to participate, only those that have had an interview requested within the Semester 1 Report. It is anticipated that by using these platforms additional meeting time flexibility will be available to parents and teachers, without the restrictions of specific days (e.g., traditionally Tuesday and Wednesdays with face-to-face meetings).

Year 10 Parent Information Evening

The scheduled Parent Information Evening scheduled for Tuesday the 17th of August at 5:30pm – 6:30pm will remain unchanged, with the exception that it will now be presented via the Teams platform. Further details will be forwarded via email to all Year 10 parents.

Seqwater ‘Day Zero’ Incursion

The ‘Day Zero’ incursion presented by Seqwater, to supplement the Year 7 Geography unit ‘Water in our World,’ will be delivered virtually via the Microsoft Teams platform on the 18th of August.

The College Musical ‘Beauty and the Beast Jr’ rescheduled for Wednesday the 3rd November 2021 (Week 5 in Term 4)

Mrs Ryan (Music Coordinator) has contacted MIT Publishing, and approval has been granted to reschedule the College’s ‘Beauty and the Beast Jr’ production to Week 5 of Term 4 (Wednesday 3rd November 2021).

Samantha has this week forwarded the modified Term 3 rehearsal schedule to the musical lead cast in hard copy. All classes from Prep to Year 8 have been incorporating musical performance rehearsal within their individual Music lessons, with production preparations well on track.

All that is required, is the opportunity for the audience to attend – fingers crossed!

Other activities scheduled in coming weeks, that the College will continue to monitor based on directives from the Queensland Government are:

  • Book Week (Parade: Wednesday 25th August 2021 – Week 6)

Preparations for the 2021 Book Week are well underway, with ‘Old World, New World and Other World’ themed displays to be presented within the Kelly library in coming weeks. The Junior School are working through the numerous shortlisted junior picture books, with students earmarking their favourites. Miss Tania will distribute voting slips, within library lessons next week, for the students to cast their votes on the best book overall. The Middle School students have taken up the challenge of submitting a book review of their chosen text. There are many book character costume ideas circulating throughout the College, with student anticipation building for the Week 6 event. I am hoping that parents will be able to attend this year (we sincerely missed you in 2020) – I will keep you posted!

    • Life Education remain scheduled for Week 7 (Tuesday 31st August to Friday 3rd September 2021)
    • Sporting Academy Open Day tentatively booked for Friday 3rd September 2021
    • Year 3 – 4 Camp (and Year 2 Camp Visit) Week 9: 13 – 15 September.

Further Advice

It is important that we all monitor and follow health directives to keep our community safe in the current climate.

Vulnerable Staff and Students
Staff or students who are vulnerable or have health concerns should seek advice from their General Practitioner.

Student Illness
If students are showing any signs of being sick, they must stay home. Any student that is sick at school will have parents contacted. This includes students who might only be slightly unwell.

Mask Wearing
All students, parents and Teaching Team, and any visitors to the campus must wear a face mask at all times, even when social distancing is possible. Masks may be removed if eating or drinking, or if alone in an office or meeting room, or it is unsafe to wear a mask. In the case of educational delivery, all teachers must wear a mask but may remove it if required to provide a clear instruction during delivery, remembering to put the mask on back on once finished giving the instructions. Mask wearing remains a clear directive from the Queensland Government. Some exceptions apply.

Physical Distancing
In addition to mask wearing, we ask all to please keep up the good work with physical distancing wherever practicable.

High Standards of Hygiene and Cleaning
All members of our community are encouraged to continue maintaining high standards of hygiene and strict adherence to Queensland Government directives.

CBA Book Week 2021

Book Week celebrations start Monday 23 August.

We will have Book Week Parade during our whole school assembly on Wednesday 25 August at 1.30pm. Old Worlds, New Worlds, Other Worlds is the theme for this year.

Each year public libraries and school libraries celebrate books, their authors and illustrators.

In the foyer of the Kelly Library is a display of our purchased short-listed books for teachers and students to read in the lead up to Book Week.

Our teachers are progressing through the junior school picture books and thoroughly enjoying the colourful stories of a cute quokka, a cockroach who gate-crashes a birthday party, not to mention the imaginative Bryce who escapes washing his flea-ridden dog. It has been delightful to listen to the children’s glee!

Middle School Camp

A sigh of relief was felt from students and staff as we finally disembarked for our Term 1 middle school camp, which really took place during Term 3 but we will try not to mention that. A buzz of positive energy was felt in the bus as we made our way to Redland Bay.

Upon arrival our clean, smiling, energetic and excited PBC students were greeted by Laura and Venessa, our camp leaders for the next four days. Students were quickly assigned cabin and day groups and in no time, we were sent off to our first of many activities. Students experienced things such as the giant swing, leap of faith, ropes courses, bush craft exercises, raft building, canoeing, and abseiling. These activities encouraged students to develop skills of inclusivity, teamwork, communication, resilience, and self-reflection.

It is fair to say that all students were absolutely exhausted by night one and everyone slept like a log (except for Mr. Green who had the pleasure of listening to Mr. Cahalan’s snoring). By day two, students and staff were well into the swing of things and our activity day groups began to form a new sense of comradery as we began to feel more comfortable in our surroundings. After our day’s activities, we enjoyed sharing stories about our recent adventures over dinner and then around a campfire.

To celebrate day three and the end of our time at camp, a disco was organised, this allowed all students to have a boogie and do plenty of socialising. In addition to this, about half of the students relocated to a new area of the grounds for a teacher/student campout. After the disco, students sat around the campfire, shared stories, and played some campfire games.

Dreary eyes greeted us on the final morning, and it was not long until home. The bus was eagerly awaited by all students, however, this time with dirty, tired, sometimes smelly but none the less still smiling PBC students. Chants and cheers bellowed through the bus as PBC was back in sight. All in all, we had a very successful camp which included the forming of new friendships, overcoming personal fears and barriers and the acquisition of new and important life experiences, that we will hopefully remember for a lifetime.

Year 1

TENIELE ADLER

Year 1 Potato Olympics

There were a lot of fierce competitors in the Year 1 Potato Olympics (lockdown style). Our coaches worked extremely hard to make sure their potato athletes were up for the challenges put before them. Athletes competed in 4 gruelling events.

  1. Distance – Rolling down a ramp and using handspans to measure the distance travelled.
  2. Diving – Dropping athlete from a height of 1 metre into a pool of water.
  3. Dance – Athletes took to the dance floor to determine who could spin the longest.
  4. Shot put – Athletes were catapulted through the air.

While I can confirm that many athletes lost multiple body parts, it is pleasing to hear that they all are recovering well.

Year 5C

HEATH CAHALAN

Digital Tech: Stop Motion

This Term students are culminating a range of 21st century skills to create stop motion animations.

This week we explored clay-mation (clay animation). What students produced in a short 30-minute time frame was nothing short of amazing.

The student’s final assessment is to create a stop motion video on the theme belonging.

Year 8R

GRACE STEVENSON

Digital Technologies

During our class activities in Week 1, Samson from 8R created this awesome artwork with his code. Experimentation can create some amazing results, we loved how this looked like an artwork and was made by coding!

ELO – Enrichment board games: Dominion.

Students did a fantastic job learning the rules and picked up the game’s strategy extremely quickly. This allowed for maximum playing time.

Catan will be our focus game in a fortnight’s time.
