Principal’s Report

WAYNE KENNEDY

Dear Parents and Caregivers

On Tuesday 9th November I was pleased to supervise the Business examination paper; the last external QCAA assessment for our Year 12 students. At the conclusion of the examination the students were all at different phases of processing their own personal milestones. However, the jubilation of completing Year 12 was clear.  I am certain that the Year 12 students’ families, and the Senior Secondary teaching team would also have breathed a sigh of relief, as Year 12 studies affect all.   I would like to congratulate all our Year 12 students for the calm and diligent way they prepared for and executed their examinations. I would also like to acknowledge Jaidyn Wilson for his achievements within Business in 2022, with the QCAA to use Jaidyn’s Year 12 submissions as exemplars of best practice in their 2023 documentation.  The 2022 Year 12 Graduation dinner will take place at 6pm on Monday 14th November at Coolum Surf Club – Private Dining Room. The 9-12 Awards and Year 12 Graduation Assembly will take place within the Kelly Library on Thursday 17th November at 9am. The Graduation Assembly will be attended by Secondary students (Year 7-12).  Parents of award recipients (Years 9-12) will be notified by email; however, all parents are welcome to attend.

Within the Year 9-12 Award and Year 12 Graduation Assembly, current School Captains Kyan B. and Nash W, will be presenting the 2023 School Captains and Sporting Captains with their badges and blazers.

It has been a pleasure working with Kyan and Nash, and I look forward to witnessing our new student leaders achieving many goals and objectives in 2023.

2023 NAPLAN

The Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority have moved the NAPLAN testing window forward for 2023.  NAPLAN has previously been held in the second week of May for students in Year 3, 5, 7 and 9.  However, the education minister has agreed to move the nine-day test window for NAPLAN to Term 1. NAPLAN will begin on Wednesday 15th March 2023 and end on Monday 27th March 2023.  All devices used for testing will need to have the new version of the lock-down browser installed, which will be available from late November 2022.  Our IT and Administration team will create a timeline to implement the process of installing the new lock-down browser as soon as we have access to the new version. For more information on NAPLAN please contact the College or assess nap.edu.au. The ‘NAPLAN Information for Parents and Carers 2023’ provides clear information.

Curriculum Review

In June 2020 the Education Council agreed to a review of the Australian Curriculum. In June 2022, the Minister for Education advised that Queensland would implement the Australian Curriculum Version 9.0 for all learning areas by 2026. Version 9.0 introduces changes in all dimensions of the curriculum, including the eight learning areas, seven general capabilities and three cross-curriculum priorities.  The QCAA is supporting schools to implement the revised curriculum and plan quality assessment by providing advice, online resources, and professional learning. I attended a QCAA Australian Curriculum Leadership forum on the 19th of October, while other teachers will also be attending subject specific workshops in coming weeks. The QCAA have made recommended that schools implement the following timeframe for the implementation of Version 9:

  • 2023 – Familiarisation and planning with v9.0 (English & Mathematics)
  • 2024 – Commence implementation (Technologies, Health & Physical Education)
  • 2025 – Commence implementation (Languages, Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences)
  • 2026 – Full implementation (All learning areas)

In recent Staff Meetings the teaching team have received ‘Snapshot’ information on each subject area to commence the familiarisation process. As a college we are confident that we will be able to implement Version 9 of the Australian Curriculum in 2023.

Self Improving Schools

On Thursday 10th November, the Leadership team meet for the last time with Independent Schools Queensland representative Mr. Randall Burow, within the Self-Improving Schools program.  The annual evaluation of the Self-Improving Schools program was successfully completed for 2022. Year 3

SAVANNAH DAVIS & PETA GOLDING

3D Shapes – Year 3.2

In Maths last week, students learnt about 3D shapes and identified its features. They also explored the nets of a range of 3D shapes and recognised that it is made up of 2D shapes. Students completed a fun activity in pairs where they had to construct a 3D shape using spaghetti and marshmallows. Next, they took a picture of the shape on their iPad and wrote its faces, edges and corners. Students definitely felt challenged during this task!
