Principal’s Report

WAYNE KENNEDY

Dear Parents

It is nice to have a reprieve from the most recent wet weather events, however the cool winter mornings are indeed upon us.and it looks like there will be no slowing down.  I want to recognise the extraordinary efforts of our school’s community and the teaching team over the past couple of months as we have steered our way through a string of weather and pandemic-related challenges. I know many of you have had to adapt to change and support our students through a highly disrupted few months, so I would like to commend you all on your efforts and I certainly hope for a much smoother route going forward.

The improved weather conditions made for an exceptional athletics carnival on Friday 3rd June (Week 7). Thank you to all parents that were able to attend. The preparations made by Mr Wareing and Mr Smith, who overcome COVID and illness in the week prior (to ensure all was in good order) not only shows personal resilience but devotion and professionalism towards delivering quality physical education programs. Feedback from students, parents and the teaching team was extremely positive, with all thoroughly enjoying the carnival. The teacher’s vs students relay race at the completion of the athletic event was a highlight for me, as it encapsulated the positive competition and energy displayed by students and the teaching team throughout the day.

Football/Futsal

Week 7, also saw the College enter six teams (Under 9 – 14’s) into the 2022 Sunshine Coast School Futsal competition. The Under 14’s achieved the accolade of runners-up, with all other Sporting Academy teams winning their division. Mr Wilkes, Mr Wareing and Mr Freudigmann were extremely pleased with the sportsmanship and skill displayed by our boys’ and girls’ teams.  The Under 10/11 boys were also victorious in the SEQ Noosa Districts Primary Schools Tournament (undefeated throughout the event). It is extremely rewarding to see the many hours dedicated to training and the devotion and commitment by all Sporting Academy stakeholders reaping reward.  The rain delayed and rescheduled Bill Turner Cup will take place on Monday 6th June. We wish all teams representing the College success in their quest to secure the Bill Turner Cup at Peregian Beach College for another year.

Prep & Year 1

On Wednesday the 8th June our Prep and Year 1 students had an excursion to the Australian Zoo. The preparations rivalled the most strategic military campaigns.  To ensure that student to teacher ratio guidelines were appropriately met we had eleven staff members attending the excursion.  The map of the Zoo was scrutinised by students and staff in the weeks prior, with every location that ‘had’ to be visited, tactically plotted well in advance.  The energy and excitement generated by students on the morning of the excursion was wonderful to experience.  It was extremely rewarding to hear a student state to their teacher at the end of the day ‘that was the best day of my life!’.

First Aid in Schools

On Monday, all students in Year 1 -6 will participate in the First Aid in Schools program. The First Aid in Schools (St Johns initiative) provides primary students with the opportunity to be taught the basics of first aid and resuscitation.  Children are often required to act when no adult is available to assist. The equipping students with age-appropriate modules to administer basic first aid has been well received by students and parents in pervious years.

Basketball Expression of Interest

The College will be conducting a second Basketball ‘Expression of Interest’ information meeting within the Kelly library on Sunday 12th June at 9:30am – 11:00am.  This event is to discuss the proposed plan and rollout for the implementation of a full-time basketball program within our Sporting Academy in 2023. For further information please email sport@pbc.qld.edu.au.

Car Parking

The congestion issues being experienced within our College carpark at prime pick up and drop off times, was highlighted on our Prep and Year 1 excursion day; with parents rightfully wanted to enter College grounds in the morning and afternoon; with available car spaces being in short supply.  Commencing next week, preparations will be undertaken to expand the existing carpark further east (where bunting has been placed).  It is anticipated that the additional parking space will be completed in the holiday period – in preparation for Term 3.  The reconfiguration of car parking spaces in the main carpark is also being undertaken to allow for more efficient use of the available space. As the College continues to grow ‘kiss and drop’ zone will be prioritised, with an unfortunate reduction in opportunities for parking and socialising to be undertaken. It is anticipated that the additional parking space will increase traffic flow for Semester 2.

Winter Uniform Adjustments

With the weather cooling down we have had a number of families ask about warmer clothing options.  Students are able to wear navy pants such as these, which are available at The School Locker:  https://theschoollocker.com.au/biz-collection-track-pants-microfibre-navy.

Navy tights or leggings can be worn by girls under their shorts/skorts, not in lieu of uniform bottoms.

Plain navy jumpers/pullovers can be worn underneath the College spray jacket for added warmth, should students then warm up they can remove the jumper and continue wearing their College spray jacket.

Library News

Hello students and families,

The final day to place an order in Issue 4 of Scholastic Book Club is Sunday 12 June.  Orders are usually delivered approximately 10 days after that.   It’s lovely to hear our students ask eagerly and with anticipation when their books will arrive.

The Children’s Book Council of Australia has announced the theme for this year’s Book Week.

Japanese

SAMANTHA WILLIAMS

The Years 3-6 students have been learning to introduce themselves in Japanese this term.  They have learnt to say their name, age, nationality, where they live, the sports they do and don’t do.

They did such an incredible job!

This is Abby and Morgan from Year 5 performing their self-introductions.

Science: Sundials

In Science this week, students investigated the way we can use the path of the sun in the sky and the shadows it casts, to tell the time.

They designed, produced, tested and presented a sundial in small groups. Students only used a paper plate, a skewer and a pen to for this challenging experiment.

Design Technology

Year 3 made shopping bags in Design Technology this term, repurposed out of old t-shirts that may have otherwise ended up in landfill. Very sustainable, Year 3!

Year 5

HEATH CAHALAN

Students in year 5 have been learning to code their own game.

The games are brilliant and showcase their 21st century skills, maths skills and digital literacy skill.
Well done year 5!

Year 6

SHARON HEMMINGS

Students were given a creative opportunity to become ‘Educational Entrepreneurs’ and were challenged to put the concepts of fractions into a game format. When creating and subsequently playing each other’s games, probability and judgments became real, rather than abstract mathematical ideas. Students evaluate each other’s games, providing further practice in the topics that had been previously taught.

Jake Butler rose to the occasion and created an amazing game which really appealed to the Year 6 students. Each part was carefully handmade (including the box) showing true dedication and commitment to the task. ‘Guess-Dimation’ certainly included all the elements of an exciting game. Well done, Jake!

Movement

Walking Club

Every Thursday afternoon, students from PBC Walking Club get the opportunity to travel to various locations around our immediate area and go for a walk together. It’s a great opportunity to not only discover the beautiful surrounds we live in, but to also catch up with friends, get in a little exercise and enjoy the fresh air. Considering how horrible the weather has been this term, we have been lucky to have dodged the rain every Thursday. Our return trip walks so far have included: Noosa Main Beach to Little Cove, Sunshine Beach Rugby Fields to Hastings Street, Stumers Creek to Tickle Park, Noosa Main Beach to the Spit and Stumers Creek to Point Arkright Lookout.

Junior Creative Writing

As the colder months quickly descend upon us, the Junior Creative Writing group decided to write a first-person account of what it might be like to become trapped inside a snow globe! The students wrote some wonderful creative pieces with some very inventive snow globe settings ranging from ‘Paris’ to ‘Candy Cane World’. We also looked at how authors use alliteration in their writing and we have begun to create our very own ‘Once Upon an Alphabet’ stories inspired by the author Oliver Jeffers. Such great work!

Sporting Achievements

Futsal:

Last week PBC entered numerous teams into the Sunshine Coast School Futsal Titles. This event is open to any school on the Sunshine Coast to enter. Of the 8 divisions entered, PBC won 6. Congratulations to all players, coaches and staff who contributed to the outstanding results achieved and good luck at the next stage.

NDSS SEQ Cup:

On June 2, PBC had the role of convening the South East Qld Cup Football competition for Noosa District. This is an important competition for PBC, as we were the champion school last year. PBC entered one junior boys’ side into this competition, with this side going undefeated on the day, meaning they now progress to the next stage. Well done boys!

Eli Melinz:

Congratulations to Eli Melinz on his selection into the Sunshine Coast under 12 boys hockey team. Good luck at the next stage in a couple of weeks Eli, PBC knows you will smash it!

Athletics Carnival:

Last Friday PBC held our 2022 Athletics Carnival. The weather was great and our students performed very well. Congratulations to all students who trained extremely hard and competed with great enthusiasm. Thank you to all the parents, relatives and friends who came along to support our athletes at the carnival. Mr Wareing is still in the process of conducting senior events, calculating points and organising ribbons. Fingers crossed all will be finalised shortly.
