Enrolment Growth Reflects Confidence in Independent Education

This week, Independent Schools Australia (ISA) released its latest national report, Independent Schooling 2025 – Enrolment Trends, Characteristics and Projections. The findings paint a clear picture: families across the nation are continuing to place their trust in independent education in record numbers.

Nationally, independent schools recorded their strongest growth in more than a decade, increasing enrolments by 3.9% in 2023–24. Independent schools now educate 745,000 students, representing 18% of all enrolments nationwide. Over the past five years, enrolments in the sector have grown on average 3.4% per year, more than three times the growth rate of the overall student population. Growth is particularly strong in low-fee schools, regional areas, and outer suburbs, reflecting the broad appeal and accessibility of independent schooling.

Queensland continues to lead the way, with independent schools growing by 4.8% in 2023–24—the fastest rate in the country; and now enrolling over 154,000 students. This places Queensland’s five-year average growth at an impressive 4.3%.

The sector’s diversity and inclusivity also continue to strengthen, with 175,000 students with disability, 20,907 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, and 145,937 students in regional and remote areas now attending independent schools. These figures highlight the commitment to ensuring every student has access to a quality education that supports their individual needs.

Here at PBC, we’re certainly feeling the ripple effects of this national trend. Our enrolments team, led by Shae alongside our Primary and Secondary Coordinators, Nigel and Nicola, have been busier than ever managing enquiries, paperwork, and tours. With three new students joining Year 7 this week alone and more interviews scheduled each week, there’s no sign of slowing down.

Looking ahead to 2026, we anticipate steady growth, with our student numbers expected to rise from 372 to approximately 390. While these figures are encouraging, enrolments are always subject to the many changes life brings; employment shifts, relocations, and family circumstances all play a part. As a college, we plan at least six months ahead to ensure our staffing, programs, and resources are ready to meet the needs of every student.

Managing growth brings both opportunities and challenges. With class caps ideally set at 25, accommodating new families sometimes means difficult decisions; whether to create waitlists, open new classes, or adjust structures to maintain our standards of care and quality. For example, we may have a couple of families with multiple children who wish to enrol, 2 of those children in the same year level which already has 25 students in the class. The decision to deny entry due to the class number moving to 27, means other classes may miss out on new students that would bring the class number up to improve its financial sustainability, more resourcing, improved gender balance and social dynamics. While smaller class sizes offer many benefits, they also come with resource implications, and we continue to balance financial sustainability with our commitment to personalised learning and strong relationships.

As we navigate these growing pains, we remain focused on what matters most, our students and our community. Growth brings new friendships, expanded opportunities, and enriched programs, and we are excited for what lies ahead. Thank you for your continued support and trust as we move forward together.

Class Placement Process for 2026

As we approach the end of the year, we are beginning the important process of forming class lists for 2026. This is a thoughtful and detailed process that takes into consideration a range of factors, including each student’s academic needs, social connections, emotional wellbeing, gender balance, and overall class dynamics. Our goal is always to create balanced and supportive learning environments where every student can thrive.

We ask that families place their trust in us as we work through this process, knowing that we always have each student’s best interests at heart. Our staff spend significant time discussing and considering what will best support every child’s growth and success.

However, we understand there may be circumstances or information that the school is not yet aware of that could be important to take into account. This year, we are introducing a new process for families who wish to share relevant considerations.

If you believe there is an important factor that should be reiterated or there is something new the school should be aware of when planning class placements, families are invited to submit a letter addressed to me. The letter should be placed in a sealed envelope and delivered to the main reception. Please include in your letter what you would like us to take into consideration and the context/reasoning behind it.

Please note this information needs to be received by the end of week 7 in Term 4 (Friday 21 November 2025).

Thank you for your support and trust as we continue to work together to ensure the best outcomes for all students.

Year 6 Student Leadership Process

This week marks an exciting stage in our Year 6 Student Leadership process, with the short-listing of successful applicants for 2026 positions and students being notified. It has been an absolute joy to speak with so many enthusiastic and capable young people throughout this process. The calibre of applicants has been outstanding, making the selection process incredibly challenging. We are very proud of all students who have shown initiative, courage, and commitment in putting themselves forward for leadership roles.

Year 6 into Year 7 Transition Day – Success!

Recently, we held our Year 6 into Year 7 Transition Day for both current and new PBC students. The day was a wonderful success, filled with excitement, curiosity, and enthusiasm as students experienced a taste of secondary school life.

It was fantastic to see how confidently our future Year 7s engaged with the activities, met new classmates, and connected with staff. Students began the day with a range of mingling games and activities, followed by a Q&A session with some of our current Year 7s. Thank you to those students who eagerly volunteered to share their experiences and insights into Year 7 life — your contribution was greatly appreciated.

A big thank you also to all staff involved in the planning and running of the day. Your efforts ensured our incoming students felt welcomed, supported, and excited about beginning their high school journey. We look forward to continuing to build these connections as we prepare for another smooth and successful Transition Day on November 26.

Year 12 External Exams

Our Year 12 students are currently in the midst of their external examination period, marking the final stage of their senior studies. We are incredibly proud of the focus, determination, and maturity they have shown throughout this important time.
A special shout-out goes to those students who sat their Biology exam during the recent hailstorm, they are to be commended on their composure and I’m sure that will be a memory that won’t soon be forgotten.
These exams are a culmination of years of effort and persistence, and we wish all our Year 12s the very best as they complete their final assessments and prepare to celebrate the end of their school journey.

Primary School Coordinator Report

As we move into the final weeks of Term 4, there is a wonderful sense of excitement and accomplishment across the Primary School.

Prep Transition

Our Prep Transition program for 2026 is almost complete, with our final transition morning taking place next Thursday alongside a Parent Information session. Since Term 2, our future Preps have been immersed in a range of engaging events and activities at Peregian Beach College, building confidence, friendships, and a sense of belonging and familiarity. It has been a delight to watch these young learners begin their journey into our PBC community. Thank you to the families who have supported our Prep Transition Program.

Year 6 Leadership and Year 7 Transition

Our student leadership process is now in Stage 2, where our Year 5 students are thoughtfully preparing and submitting their leadership submission. Those applying for School Captain will present their leadership submission as a speech to the Primary School community in Week 7. Students applying for Sports Captain will submit their written submission by Week 7. This is always a proud moment as we see our senior students demonstrate their growth, passion, and readiness to lead. Thank you to those students who have returned their leadership applications and to their families for supporting them – we are looking forward to the next stage, and reviewing all applications and submissions to make a decision for our 2026 School Captains and Sports Captains – a first in the Primary School at Peregian Beach College.

Meanwhile, our Year 6 students have also been busy with their high school transition activities and are eagerly looking forward to their upcoming Graduation Ceremony. It's an exciting and reflective time as they prepare to celebrate their achievements and take their next big step into secondary schooling.

End of Year Learning and Celebrations

Supporting You in Raising Teens

Parenting a teenager can be one of the most rewarding — and at times, one of the most challenging — stages of family life. The teen years are a time of enormous growth and change. Young people are learning who they are, testing boundaries, forming stronger opinions, managing friendships, navigating school pressures, and spending more time online. As parents, it can sometimes feel like the relationship you once had has shifted overnight.

Many parents describe this period as an emotional rollercoaster — moments of pride and laughter, mixed with worry or frustration. You might wonder:

  • How do I stay connected when my teen starts to pull away?
  • What’s “normal” behaviour, and when should I be concerned?
  • How do I talk about sensitive issues like mental health, relationships, or online safety?

The good news is: you’re not alone. There are practical, evidence-based tools to help you strengthen your relationship with your teen and feel more confident in your parenting decisions. One of the best places to start is ReachOut Parents— a free, Australian service designed to support parents and carers of 12- to 18-year-olds.

🌱 What is ReachOut Parents?

ReachOut Parents offers free, expert-informed resources to help you navigate the ups and downs of adolescence. The site includes:

  • Practical articles and advice on topics like mental health, school refusal, friendships, screen time, and communication.
  • One-on-one coaching sessions with trained parenting coaches to help you manage specific challenges and build stronger connections.
  • 24/7 access to support, so you can find help at any time that suits your family.

💬 Why It Matters

Adolescence can be a confusing time for both teens and parents. Having a trusted, research-based source of information can help you:

  • Understand what your teen is going through — emotionally, socially, and developmentally.
  • Learn effective ways to communicate, even when your teen seems distant.
  • Recognise when extra support might be needed, and how to find it.

🧭 How You Can Use It

  • Visit parents.au.reachout.com and explore the Topics section for relevant advice on parenting skills, wellbeing, and online safety.
  • Book a free coaching session if you’re dealing with an ongoing issue like school refusal, anxiety, or changes in mood or behaviour.
  • Use the articles as a conversation starter — share what you’ve read and ask your teen what they think.
  • Encourage other carers (partners, grandparents, friends) to visit the site too — it’s a great shared resource.

💡 Quick Tips for Connecting With Your Teen

  • Choose one topic to explore this month — for example, screen time and digital balance.
  • After reading an article together, ask open-ended questions such as, “What do you think about this?” or “How can I support you better?”
  • Focus on connection, not perfection. It’s okay not to have all the answers — showing that you’re listening and care is what matters most.
  • If you notice ongoing changes in your teen’s mood or behaviour, reach out early — support is always available.

❤️ You’re Doing Better Than You Think

Raising teens is a journey filled with learning, growth, and joy. Every conversation, every boundary, every bit of care you show makes a difference — even if your teen doesn’t always say so.

Their involvement demonstrated outstanding responsibility and commitment to the RISE pillar of Service to Others, reflecting the leadership, compassion, and generosity we value so highly at the College.

UniSC Experience Day

Earlier this term, our Year 10 students attended the UniSC Experience Day at the University of the Sunshine Coast, where they had the opportunity to explore future study and career pathways through a series of engaging, hands-on workshops. Students participated in interactive sessions across the Creative Industries, Business, and Health faculties, heard inspiring stories from current university students, and even tested their knowledge in a fun round of Uni Trivia. The experience offered valuable insight into campus life and helped students begin thinking about their post-school options. A special thank you to Mr McDuff for driving the bus and supporting our students throughout the excursion.

Prep News

It’s been a wonderfully busy few weeks in Prep.

In English, our InitiaLit story focus has been Wombat Stew — always a firm favourite. Our budding writers had a fantastic time making their own versions of Wombat Stew and writing detailed recounts of their ‘cooking’ adventures.

We’ve also been working on our animal non-fiction books, learning and writing about fascinating creatures such as thorny devils, gulper eels, eastern brown snakes, and even capybaras!

Last Thursday, our excited Preppies set off on an excursion to see Pevan & Sarah live in concert at Venue 114, Bokarina. Pevan & Sarah are passionate Australian educators who create fun, engaging songs and resources that support learning in literacy, numeracy, and social–emotional development. Our youngest PBC students were an absolute credit to the school; their beautiful behaviour, enthusiasm and joyful participation made us all incredibly proud.

Great work, Prep 😊

Peregian Beach College Netball Teams Shine at the 2026 Lightning Cup

Under a blazing sun and relentless competition, both the girls and boys netball teams from Peregian Beach College displayed incredible determination at this year’s Lightning Cup. The event, held last Friday at Maroochydore Multisport Centre, tested every player’s endurance, teamwork, and spirit.

From the first whistle to the final siren, our athletes gave it their all; diving for intercepts, defending with grit, and pushing through fatigue to the very end. The boys team impressed with their fast passing and tight defence, while the girls’ side showed outstanding cohesion and resilience in every match.

Despite the hot and sticky conditions, both teams played with pride, supporting each other on and off the court and earning the admiration of spectators and opponents alike. The Lightning Cup lived up to its name…intense, electrifying, and unforgettable and Peregian Beach College once again proved its strength in heart, teamwork, and sportsmanship. The boys ended the day with 3 wins, 2 losses and a draw and the girls with 4 wins and 2 losses.  Overall the boys finished 18th and the girls finished 10th on the day.

Congratulations to all players and coaches for representing our college with such energy and passion!  And a big thank you to parents Amy N and Elisha E for scoring the games!

Go PBC!

Pink Run

It was awesome to see the PBC Community out in force last Friday, helping to turn Noosa pink in support of the McGrath Foundation. Our students, staff, and families completed the 5km course on what was a very steamy morning with almost 2000 other participants.

Year 3 Science – States of Matter Investigation

As part of our States of Matter unit, Year 3 students recently took part in an exciting hands-on investigation titled: Solid or Liquid?. Working in small groups, students followed an investigation to discover why mixing corn flour and water can behave like both a solid and a liquid. Before beginning, they predicted what would happen when the two ingredients were combined, then tested their ideas through observation and experimentation. This engaging activity encouraged students to think critically, make predictions and explore how some materials can change their properties.

Well done, Kai

Current PBC student, Kai Holmes, is living the dream whilst completing his final external exams as a Y12 student. Kai is living in Spain after receiving a scholarship. Kai’s hard work as both a student and Fire Academy athlete has enabled him to live and train in an environment many younger students aspire to.
Kai’s mum, Nicole, explains “It’s been a hectic change, but Kai has settled in well and has slipped into the Spanish lifestyle. He has impressed all with his juggling of study, games, lessons and domestic duties.  We were all nervous, particularly Kai, that the first exam would be a challenge, but it all went like clockwork.  Same goes with the next exam and he has one more next week, PE.  He’s a constant standout with the club photographer, see attached, and started to make himself known.  He assisted with 3 goals in the last game just by his throw ins and did his first interview this week, spoke so well and confident, he’s matured so much.”
Kai’s success is not only testament to his dedication to his football and studies, but also to the support of his family, teachers and PBC Fire Academy coaches.

Year 1 – Grow Your Mind

Kindness has been a focus across the school in our Grow Your Mind program this term. Year 1 have taken it to the next level by challenging themselves with a 20-Day Kindness Challenge! Each day we reveal a new challenge which has encouraged Year 1 students (and teachers) to courageously step up to be kind and compassionate in different ways. Some of our challenges have included writing poems about special people, picking up litter around the school grounds, playing with someone new in the playground, complimenting others, thanking those who help us at school and making sure we are fueling our bodies with fresh fruit, vegetables and plenty of water. We’ve read inspiring stories about kindness and created some beautiful classroom displays. Did you know that kindness is like a boomerang? Year 1 students have seen first-hand that when you show kindness to others, it often comes back to you — lifting everyone around you with positivity along the way.
In a world where you can be anything… Be Kind!
